A show of strength

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 16/09/2022

» Over the past few years, American superheroes have dominated the movies in cinemas and series on various streaming services. That is likely to continue since Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe consists of planned releases in 2023 and 2024, while DC Extended Universe also has at least five films to be released next year. Art against authority

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 16/07/2021

» We can all agree on one thing: this whole pandemic is a crapfest. The time when Thailand was lauded for successfully handling the first wave has long gone and we are in the throes of the third wave with daily cases almost hitting 10,000 (at least in the time of going to print), hospitals running out of beds for patients and vaccinations going at a snail's pace. The anger and fury directed at the government's handling of the third wave has reached boiling point and none are more vocal about it than political artists, who have found a home, voice and audience on Facebook. From tarot cards to 3D renders, here are a few artists who use their art to make their voices heard.

Voices that matter

Guru, Suthivas Tanphaibul, Published on 09/07/2021

» It's been over a year since the coronavirus pandemic swept across Thailand. Restaurants, bars and other businesses have shut shop in droves while nightlife districts have turned into ghost towns. The streets are eerily empty while rental ads and closing signs are spotted on dusty iron shutters. Countless people who work in the nightlife and entertainment industries have been among the first groups to be most severely hit by the effects of Covid-19 and yet, they also seem to be the last group to receive any empathy from the powers that be. Their places of work have been temporarily closed or restricted to a point that they can no longer earn a livelihood. But empathy isn't what they want (or need), they are demanding accountability from the authorities. Let's hear what they have to say.

Is democracy sustainable?

Guru, Nianne-Lynn Hendricks, Published on 09/10/2020

» "Status In Statu" is a group exhibition by art practitioners behind the Khon Kaen Manifesto, on display at WTF Gallery until Oct 30. Inaugurated in October 2018, this biannual event takes place in the unorthodox location -- a non-white cube gallery or a museum -- that allows artists to genuinely embed themselves with the oppressed and to present unique stories through the participation of ordinary citizens.
