» The santur is an ancient stringed instrument, a dulcimer, with 72 strings that can be dated to 500 BC. Assyrian and Babylonian stone carvings show the instrument back in 669 BC. The instrument spread widely in the Middle East and later further afield where it morphed into the hammered dulcimer, the qanun, cimbalom, Indian santoor and even the Thai classical instrument, the kim.

» In the northern town of Nan last week, in 35°C midday heat, a colourful procession of villagers wearing distinctive ethnic attire made its way to Wat Phra That Chae Haeng down a lengthy staircase, aside which a pair of naga sculptures stood like guardians. A number of classic wood litters carried replicas of a gold, bell-shaped pagoda as well as various Buddhist offerings such as Lanna-style flags and khan dok trees, all to mark the return of the annual seven-day Hok Peng Festival.

» American landscape architect and environmentalist Bill Bensley considers himself a complete novice in the art world since he has never trained as a painter. He picked up a paintbrush under the instruction of his dear friend and Caribbean-based painter Kate Spencer to manifest his unique perspective on life and surroundings. He also emulated other artists' styles and delved into the world of fauvism art, bursting with bold colours and a sense of humour. After several painting holidays with Spencer, Bensley eventually discovered his own path, which is full of gorgeous details and vivid colours with enchanting figures.
