Buddhism is always oddly political

Oped, Guanxiong Qi, Published on 29/11/2024

» On the upcoming Wednesday, a grand ceremony will be held at Sanam Luang to welcome a sacred tooth relic of the Lord Buddha. China is sending a precious piece of Buddha relics to Thailand for a 72-day procession in celebration of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua's 72nd birthday and the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Thailand. This piece of Buddha's remains, referred to as the "Buddha Tooth Relic from the Lingguang Temple", is arguably one of the most important Buddhist treasures ever discovered in China.

No time for cruel jokes

Oped, Editorial, Published on 17/03/2023

» As the election draws near, it's more evident that any reconciliation -- as promised by Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha when he staged a coup in 2014 -- isn't going to happen. Pressure groups and parties have filed complaints against one another as the political climate becomes more tense. Political campaigns have become places for disputes and even scuffles.

Olympic spirit hopes

Oped, Postbag, Published on 12/06/2021

» What happens at the 2020 Olympic Games with the motto "United by Emotion" will stay in Tokyo forever. The organising committee has announced that it will be the first games without foreign spectators. This has never been the case since the first modern summer Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. Even now, no one is sure if Japan will be able to welcome more than 11,000 athletes to Tokyo this year.

Activist scapegoats?

Oped, Postbag, Published on 03/04/2021

» Five activists were indicted this week on charges of attempted violence against HM the Queen during a demonstration last year, when a royal motorcade encountered dozens of protesters. The charges are very serious and if guilty, the protesters would be jailed for at least 16 years (BP, April 1).

Gunboat diplomacy?

Oped, Postbag, Published on 03/03/2021

» The situation in Myanmar would seem to present a golden opportunity for a useful bit of gunboat diplomacy. What would be the likely result of an American carrier task force standing off the coast in the Gulf of Martaban or Indian Ocean? Perhaps joined by the new British aircraft carrier and French naval assets. Of course it is out of the question for a foreign invasion on the ground. However the Myanmar military might have cause to think again if faced with the threat of having its assets and installations reduced by air power. Including its small air force and command and control capability.

Cops bend to royalist mob

Oped, Editorial, Published on 13/11/2020

» If the scene of a yellow-clad royalist crowd trying to surround and viciously attack a car they believed was carrying Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, the ex-leader of the now-defunct Future Forward Party (FFP), at a hotel in a southern province on Wednesday, made the public concerned about the state of disorderliness in the country, the lack of police action in the case demonstrates something much worse. Indeed, the question now is if Thailand is on the verge of becoming a failed state.

OPINION

Protests will not yield all-out winner

Oped, Veera Prateepchaikul, Published on 02/11/2020

» Former prime minister Anand Panyarachun has broken his silence on the political conflict, which he described as nothing unusual as this has happened countless times in the past 88 years since Thailand transformed from absolute monarchy to constitutional monarchy.
