» One of the first rules we are taught when we venture onto the golf course is the rule of how we should behave, and a 'clip around the ear' by my father, when we first played together, made me understand how important this essential rule is. Etiquette includes repairing divots and ball marks, raking bunkers, and being mindful of other players by remaining quiet and still when they are playing. Also included in our game's etiquette guidelines is to be mindful of maintaining a good pace of play and allowing faster groups to play through.

» Are you having problems with pitch shots around the green, perhaps you're undecided to hit it high or low or make it stop quickly. Here's a way of making the shot selection and execution process simpler.

» During a round of golf be aware of your emotions during different stages of the 18 holes. Try to monitor your feelings and your attitude towards how you're playing and towards your playing partners. Try to practise self-awareness during your round, so that you don't allow any emotions to cloud your judgment, that might initiate negative golfing thoughts. Recognise that a bad shot or hole will naturally trigger a sense of a feeling of loss, because you've added one or more shots to your score.

» The vital importance of having a great brain box that's sparking and works well under all the problems thrown at a golfer during any round, is perhaps just as vital as the mechanics of a good golf swing. Just think of all the rubbish that Rory had to face in winning last week, the constant mundane old boring useless questions that he had to answer whilst smiling and showing interest in replying to what he had for breakfast and what he watched on TV last night.

» Keep a clear mind when practising and remember that a good swing is a combination of a lovely grip, stance and posture and the way you position your body in relation to the target. If all is done correctly the chances of hitting a good shot will drastically increase.

» A hook doesn't hurt the average golfer, it's the pulled hook that hurts. If your drive flies straight and hooks towards the end, don't worry about it. However, if your ball starts off immediately to the left, and then hooks, look for some help immediately.

» This time last year Thai golfer Patty Tavatanakit finished last in the Honda Thailand tournament and must have been wondering what the future would hold. Just two years earlier she had stunned the golfing world with a magnificent performance to win the Chevron Championship, a major and her first LPGA victory. It included the traditional celebratory dip in Poppie's Pond.

» A golfing myth is that we must keep our heads down -- in fact, keeping it down too long will hinder your swing. Keeping your head down too long prevents a good follow-through because a golfer can't swing past hip-high with the head down and not give up something good in the finish to do it.

» The term 'average golfer' is often used but sometimes l wonder, what is the average golfer. I read somewhere that statistics show that the average male golfer shoots around 92. Personally, l find this hard to believe. Playing from stringent tees and holing every putt -- most golfers won't break 100.

» If you shoot around 95 you will see improvement in 5-shot jumps if you practice diligently and take a few lessons. Equally, a player who scores say 87 will quickly come down to 81/80. The next downward plunge would be to the middle 70's. Once you play 75 regularly you are not an average golfer but will be seen as pretty good.
