More missiles, memes, and the new resistance

News, Imran Khalid, Published on 19/07/2025

» There was a time, not so long ago, when Walter Cronkite's sombre baritone could turn battlefield dispatches into moments of collective reckoning. Even the first "television war" of 1991, piped in grainy bursts from Baghdad, felt slow enough for shock to sink in. These days, the missiles that streak above Natanz or Esfahan arrive on TikTok between latte art tutorials and kittens sliding off sofas. The effect is less shock-and-awe, more scroll-and-shrug.

Hold Facebook accountable for scams, hoaxes

News, Dave Kendall, Published on 20/01/2025

» Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg's decision to fire his fact-checking team has opened the floodgates to a deluge of scams, hate speech, propaganda and lies. The campaign was later linked to propaganda farms run by Myanmar's Tatmadaw military.

AI's brain fog no defence for arts

News, Parmy Olson, Published on 05/07/2024

» Ever notice how science fiction gets things wrong about future technology? Instead of flying cars, we got viral tweets that fuelled culture wars. Instead of a fax machine on your wrist, we got memes. We're having a similar reality check with artificial intelligence. Sci-fi painted a future with computers that delivered reliable information in robotic parlance. Yet businesses who've tried plugging generative AI tools into their infrastructure have found, with some dismay, that the tools "hallucinate" and make mistakes. They are hardly reliable. And the tools themselves aren't stiff and mechanistic either. They're almost whimsical.

Gen Z become masters of comedic deflection

News, Amanda Little, Published on 30/10/2023

» 'Can we get a cute drink and snacks after this?" reads the text on a recent TikTok image of men with machine guns in army gear. It's intended to depict the attitude of young female US soldiers while storming a building in Gaza. The post, created by a Gen Zer whose popular feed abounds with Taylor Swift lip-syncs and dance videos, is captioned: "I love this trend #thedraft #war #foryou #fyp #funny."
