» While trying to work at a café the other day, I experienced the real war on Christmas. Hoping for the familiar hum of conversation and music, I was surprised upon entering that no one was talking. Still, I sat down with my notebook and attempted to focus my thoughts, but something was playing havoc with my concentration. The music seemed eerie. I lifted my head, listened, and became disturbed.

» The popular image of the remote worker is often of a highly educated, laptop-toting professional comfortably situated in a large suburban home or in some Instagrammable Airbnb. The reality is different. Of the roughly 10% of employees who say they always work from home, most are lower-paid workers in support roles -- wearing headsets and logging in from their apartments, probably in the cheaper outskirts of a large city. Their numbers are expected to increase in the years to come.

» There was encouraging news for Bangkok's pedestrians last week when the city governor announced that during the coming year there would be a major upgrade of pavements in the Big Mango. It was promised that some pavements might even become "walkable". Well, best of luck with that.

» One thing that taxpayers and politicians agree on practically everywhere is that more money should be spent on children's education. This seems like a no-brainer: better education means children get a better start in life. But we need to be careful. Many popular educational investments deliver little or no learning, while we rarely hear about the most effective investments.
