Ground game

Oped, Postbag, Published on 12/02/2026

» Re: "BJT win bodes well for conservatives", (BP, Feb 11). Given the tallies of the nationwide party list vote, I don't understand the justification for the following assertions: "BJT's landslide victory reflects a surge of nationalist sentiment" (5.9M votes); the PP suffered from "lingering voter scepticism" and "eroded public confidence" (9.8M votes).

A view of global power with a gangster's eye

Oped, Jayati Ghosh, Published on 20/01/2026

» There is a method behind the apparent madness of US President Donald Trump's transactional, spheres-of-influence approach to geopolitics and the global economy. Nowhere has this logic been clearer than in his administration's illegal abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and its ongoing efforts to secure control of the country's oil reserves by installing a client regime.

Let's just try leaning into your morbid curiosity

Oped, Coltan Scrivner, Published on 30/10/2025

» Film critics Gene Siskel and Johnny Oleksinski have called fans of slasher films like Friday the 13th and Saw "very sick people" and "depraved lunatics who should not be allowed near animals or most other living things". Public outcry around the video game Mortal Kombat in the early 1990s was so extreme that it led to a special US Senate hearing on the topic. Similarly, the recent rise of true crime entertainment has some people wondering if we are becoming desensitised to the horror and seriousness of the events themselves.

Korea martial law lessons for Thailand

Oped, Kavi Chongkittavorn, Published on 10/12/2024

» Last week, South Korea experienced a titanic political shift when President Yoon Suk-yeol imposed martial law late on Tuesday night. The move lasted just over six hours before it was lifted, making it one of the shortest-lived martial law declarations in modern political history. It was lucky because it started late at night and ended early in the morning. Had it occurred during the day, the outcome could have been very different.

Senate must prove mettle

Oped, Editorial, Published on 07/09/2022

» Today will be a chance for the 250 appointed senators to prove their mettle. By late evening, the 250 members of the Upper House and 500 MPs in the Lower House are expected to have cast votes on a charter amendment seeking to strip the Senate of its power to take part in electing a prime minister.

Justice slow in 'Boss' saga

Oped, Editorial, Published on 05/10/2021

» Finally, there are signs from the Royal Thai Police (RTP) and the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) over investigations into their high-ranking officials accused of interfering with the law in relation to the 2012 notorious hit-and-run case that involved the scion of the Red Bull empire, Vorayuth "Boss" Yoovidhya.
