A fond farewell to the poster people

Oped, Roger Crutchley, Published on 08/02/2026

» For a couple of months the streets in Bangkok and throughout Thailand have been decorated with posters of political candidates. But now the Big Day has arrived and soon the posters will disappear. In a strange sort of way, I will miss their presence as they were at least something to look at when stuck in the traffic. They generally appeared to be a cheerful lot, beaming at us with big cheesy grins as one would expect in the Land of Smiles.

Thailand's responses to Board of Peace

Oped, Kavi Chongkittavorn, Published on 27/01/2026

» US President Donald Trump's invitation to Thailand to join the Board of Peace (BOP) has elicited three distinct responses. The first two are succinct and clear in their rationale. The third, however, is more nuanced -- and notable for its ambivalence.

Oped, Kantathi Suphamongkhon, Published on 25/08/2025

» In early 2006, during the Thai prime minister's visit to Cambodia, Cambodia's PM Hun Sen casually said to his visiting counterpart, Thaksin Shinawatra, "Let's visit Preah Vihear temple together, as two friendly prime ministers.

Singapore turns 60 with much to show

Oped, Thitinan Pongsudhirak, Published on 08/08/2025

» No country turns 60 like Singapore. In a neighbourhood of political dynasties and varying shades of autocracies and flawed democracies, the little island state of six million got lucky with its strongman rule. When he died in 2015, Singapore's patriarchal founder Lee Kuan Yew left a great country behind. This weekend, Singaporeans can take stock of what's gone by and rightly celebrate its milestone with much to show for.

Bangkok for the next Trump-Kim talks?

Oped, Suthichai Yoon, Published on 06/08/2025

» Some might call it improbable. Others might say it's unrealistic. But proposing Bangkok as the host city for the next summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is neither fantasy nor wishful thinking -- it's a logical, geopolitically sound proposal rooted in history and diplomacy.
