OPINION

Reform lending laws

Oped, Postbag, Published on 03/09/2025

» Re: "Buy now, bankrupt later", (Business, Sept 1). Little is ever said about the so-called many (often SET-listed) prolific finance companies here, which charge very high interest rates, levy late fees very quickly, and impose other strict rules that are often, may we say, not very consumer-finance friendly.

Why capitalism needs leaders with stoic ideals

Oped, Jacob Soll, Published on 23/09/2022

» It might seem like an obscure footnote among the history-making events of 2022, but the year of Queen Elizabeth II's death coincides with the 300th anniversary of Adam Smith's birth.

A lovely lady with a fine sense of duty

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 11/09/2022

» Like many British people I am feeling a deep sense of loss with the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. She had been such a fixture in our lives for so long it felt she would somehow go on forever. She was always there, so calm and reassuring. That's why her death still came as shock even though she had reached the grand age of 96.

» There seems to be a consensus in Britain that the best moment of the Jubilee was Paddington Bear taking afternoon tea with Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace.

OPINION

Time to bring sexism to heel

Asia focus, Tanyatorn Tongwaranan, Published on 18/03/2019

» I've never been a big fan of high heels. While they may be an easy way to add extra height, make my legs appear longer and my calves slimmer, I find them painful and uncomfortable. I tend to wear them only when it's absolutely necessary, such as at important functions or events.

OPINION

Civilian dissent is not a crime

News, Editorial, Published on 04/02/2018

» In an ill-advised effort, the police and some military officers have teamed up to take legal action against small groups of people for peaceful gatherings or even simply using social media.

OPINION

A comedy likely to end only in horror

News, Kong Rithdee, Published on 03/02/2018

» The junta can read the stars and history and they must know this isn't going to end well. As frustration grows, as protests form, as their support ebbs even their idol Gen Prem Tinsulanonda flat-out said so they amp up censorship and tighten the squeeze, not with gusto but with desperation. With Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwon looking increasingly like a plump Chinese deity on the verge of losing his worshippers, the regime reacts with force, gagging tactics and plain old bullying.

OPINION

Regime trawl for small fry no joke at all

News, Kong Rithdee, Published on 20/01/2018

» The big fish hardly ever gets caught, not here. Only the small, the trivial, the nonsensical fish, the clownfish especially. As in school, or in prison, the bullies never bully the big kid. They only confirm their sense of power when they go after the small guys, the nerds, even the girls.
