» In the ladies golf major tournament last weekend one of the top American amateurs was 15-year-old Asterisk Talley. I don't recall ever coming across Asterisk as a name before. Apparently her mother is Greek and the word asterisk in Greek means "little star". So it would seem quite an acceptable name for a baby.

» It's about time we had some cheerful news and what could be more cheerful than witnessing the wonderful smile of 19-year-old Thai golfer Chanettee Wannasaen after her extraordinary win at the LPGA's Portland Classic last Sunday. Nicknamed "Proud" the Chiang Mai native was beaming as she clutched the large trophy which was almost as big as herself.

Admittedly summer in the UK can be rather brief, especially if the occluded fronts start misbehaving. It's no coincidence that the most common forecast in the British summer is "outlook changeable".

» The "Thailand Country Report" by the Asian Disaster Reduction Center in 1999 records that in March 1991 a chemical fire and explosion occurred in Klong Toey port near the slum area, causing an estimated 60,000 people to be exposed to toxic chemicals, setting 642 houses on fire, and leaving 5,000 individuals homeless.

» A couple of months ago PostScript carried an item about the late English comedian Richard Hearne, known as Mr Pastry, and how his walrus moustache gave him an uncanny resemblance to current White House national security adviser, John Bolton. I watched Mr Bolton giving a speech on TV this week and have to admit I could not shake off the image of the bumbling Mr Pastry. Despite reports that Mr Bolton's boss is not a huge fan of the moustache, Mr Bolton is said to be very proud of his distinctive bristle.
