Time to focus on climate funding

Oped, Rakesh Mohan & Janak Raj, Published on 04/11/2025

» Discussions about climate finance often focus on the most vulnerable countries, such as small island developing states -- and for good reason. But the nine major emerging-market economies (EMEs) -- Argentina, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, and Turkey -- also have significant climate-finance needs, which must be met if the world is to have any chance of achieving its climate goals. Nowhere are those needs larger than in China.

Rare earths are definitely China's trump card

Oped, Angela Huyue Zhang, Published on 15/08/2025

» China's weaponisation of rare earths has emerged as a major flash point in US-China trade negotiations. These critical materials, especially the high-performance magnets they make possible, are vital components in electric vehicles (EVs), wind turbines, industrial robotics, and advanced defence systems. In response to China's strict rare-earths export controls, the United States has quietly lowered tariffs, relaxed export controls on AI chips, and even softened visa restrictions for Chinese students.

Can Europe, China forge a climate connection?

Oped, Emmanuel Guerin & Bernice Lee, Published on 12/08/2025

» Earlier this year, the Chinese firm CATL, the world's largest battery-maker, unveiled an electric-vehicle (EV) battery capable of delivering a remarkable 520 kilometres (323 miles) of driving range after just five minutes of charging. The announcement came a month after BYD, China's leading EV manufacturer, launched its own ultra-fast charging system. In solar, too, the numbers are staggering: Chinese firms can now produce over 1,200 gigawatts of solar panels annually.

Protectionism hurts climate effort

Oped, Ma Jun, Published on 04/02/2025

» US President Donald Trump's policy to raise tariffs on imports from Canada, China and Mexico has the world bracing for major trade disruptions. While protectionism has come back into vogue, and countries like the United States are cultivating critical sectors at home to bolster their economic security, the reversal of free trade will accelerate under Mr Trump, with far-reaching consequences -- not least for the fight against climate change.
