» Re: "The question is not borrowing", (InQuote, April 22). Indeed, that is a golden bar of borrowings as expressed simply by our Financial Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, Ekniti Nitithanprapas. If no care is taken on how we spend someone's money once in their hands, then disaster can be expected if accountability in due time to bondholders on how they spend it and follow through is not seriously there.

» Picking mangoes at home recently highlighted the generational shift in learning. My sons, 10 and 13, were not interested in the mangoes. After years of pushing, pleading and prompting, climbing the trees is a problem for them. Interest muted. They occasionally pick mangoes with a rod to eat, but the joy of climbing trees and picking mangoes by hand is not there. Convenience, interest and options make what was once a rite of passage, a joy, a form of exercise, learning, a communion with nature and more, a mundane -- meh.

» The pause in the Middle East conflict is very welcome although with the opposing elements both claiming a "great victory" it's all a trifle confusing. Prior to the ceasefire, we had witnessed increasingly belligerent exchanges from both sides containing sombre warnings that the opposing forces were destined to end up in "hell". In fact the word "hell" was appearing so frequently it was in danger of losing its intended impact.

» I've just got back from filing my income tax and must thank the staff at the branch of the Revenue Department for their helpfulness and efficiency. It must be a thankless job knowing that nearly everyone they deal with would probably rather be somewhere else.

» An expression that is being used with increasing frequency in recent news reports, particularly concerning the goings on in the Middle East, is "off-ramp". Switch on the TV and it won't be long before a "talking head" will be authoritatively discussing "off-ramp" opportunities.

» In a world as fast-moving and unpredictable as the one we are navigating right now, it is good to know there are reliable lighthouses on the horizon and at least a few certainties upon which we can depend. One of those is that St Patrick's Day, every March 17, is an occasion that Irish people, and people of Irish heritage, and friends of Ireland, will be keen to celebrate all over the world, including here in Thailand. And for our small island, from which so many people emigrated throughout our history, this really is a global celebration of our history, culture, connections and shared values.

The Deputy Director of the German Marshall Fund, Kristina Kausch, is upset that US President Donald Trump has not sought the world's approval in his quest to destroy Iran's military abilities and for the removal of its genocidal dictatorship. One which screams daily: "Death to Israel" and "Death to America". (Time Off, Bangkok Post, March 8).
