Fashion's plastics problem isn't about packaging

News, David Fickling, Published on 03/01/2024

» Until the rise of online retail, you might have been forgiven for thinking that all apparel was shipped in burlap sacks. Those wanting their garment spending to be sustainable these days can take comfort in reusable wooden hangers, paper shopping bags, and recycled fibres. The only glimpse of plastic in many fashion stores is the electronic equipment at the checkout.

Time is on our side

Life, Thana Boonlert, Published on 15/08/2022

» Win or lose, a protest is a process of trial and error. To put it simply, it is disruption, innovation, or something in between, just the way the now-defunct but shape-shifting Future Forward Party was in 2019 because it is born out of a spirit, not a person or a party. If the student-led demonstration goes down in history for demanding the boldest political reform, including the role of the monarchy, its resurrection last week proves that the pro-democracy movement is coming of age.

Bimstec's time to shine has come

News, Editorial, Published on 03/04/2022

» From the tales of Lord Rama to the wisdom of Lord Buddha, the South Asian and Southeast Asian regions are not only historically intertwined, but also founded on a shared cultural heritage. News, Larry Jagan, Published on 07/02/2022

» Myanmar is engulfed in a civil war that is growing daily leaving diminishing options available to try to resolve it in what is a growing political impasse. For the past year, since the Myanmar military, or Tatmadaw, seized power, the country has been overwhelmed by violence and mayhem that is continuing to escalate, bringing civilian administration to a standstill throughout the country, disrupting the economy and leaving the majority of its people increasingly in danger of malnutrition and starvation. Hundreds of thousands of civilians have been displaced by the Tatmadaw's military campaigns and face a torrid and uncertain future.

New passport, pity about the mug shot

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 25/04/2021

» A fortnight ago I picked up my new British passport. It was pleasing to see it had gone back to the traditional black colour and a similar size to the burgundy EU passports Brits have experienced for three decades. Alas, I probably won't be using it very much.

T-shirt saga a witch hunt

News, Editorial, Published on 15/09/2018

» In what seems to be nothing other than a witch hunt against a small group of people who hold a political ideology seen as unorthodox in Thailand, the military junta has set a bad precedent and made an unjust move in slapping severe criminal charges against four people, who are alleged to have promoted the political concept through the distribution of T-shirts.
