A fond farewell to the poster people

» For a couple of months the streets in Bangkok and throughout Thailand have been decorated with posters of political candidates. But now the Big Day has arrived and soon the posters will disappear. In a strange sort of way, I will miss their presence as they were at least something to look at when stuck in the traffic. They generally appeared to be a cheerful lot, beaming at us with big cheesy grins as one would expect in the Land of Smiles.

» For 46 years the English literary magazine Bookseller has been holding an annual award for the oddest book title, also known as the Diagram Prize. It is generally agreed that a snappy title helps the sales of a book, although some can be a bit too snappy, bordering on ridiculous.

» What lasting benefits will Thailand enjoy having just wrapped up its hosting of Apec 2022 -- a global trade forum held in Bangkok last week? How will the much-touted meeting make Thailand better off in the long run? And will the excited chatter about a "BCG" economy ever amount to more than an acronym few working in those targeted sectors can decypher to give a full name to?

Explosive fun with bangers and mash

» Last Sunday there was a tongue-in-cheek letter in the Post suggesting the first name of the British traditional dish, bangers and mash, is derived from the Thai capital. Despite its frivolous nature the letter was actually quite timely, for a recent report indicates younger British people are surprisingly unfamiliar with bangers and mash and many other traditional dishes.
