Hog wild on Koh Samui

B Magazine, Story & photos by Melalin Mahavongtrakul, Published on 16/02/2020

» Taking tentative steps onto a long-tail boat on a shallow beach requires a certain sense of balance. After taking our seats, we put on our life jackets. The engine started and we were off in the sunshine and sea breeze to Koh Taen and Koh Matsum, less than 20 minutes from Phang Ka Bay on Koh Samui. By the time we reached the islands, we were drenched from the seawater that splashed us all along the way.

» I was never an Eat, Pray, Love fanatic and had already been to Bali when the book and movie came out. But Indonesia, a country made up of thousands of islands, is so much more than Bali.

» Luxury is often unassociated with eco-friendliness. That is not the case in Cambodia. At the Royal Sands Koh Rong, an hour off the coast of Sihanoukville, the environment is of prime concern, even before the resort was built.

» We're not even a full month into 2019 and it seems like the Thai indie music scene is already readying itself for another year of solid offerings. Leading the pack is none other than The Dumbs, a Winai Kitcharoenjiranont solo project. If that name doesn't ring a bell, Winai is one of the co-founding members of The Charapaabs, an elderly-themed concept band who's bestowed upon us a series of memento mori-inspired cuts like Funeral Party, Annual Check Up and Hello Monday. (Side note: keep an eye out for a review of their long-awaited debut LP, Maha Moradok, coming next Sunday.) He's also the brain behind TypeThai, a popular Facebook page and a YouTube channel that celebrates-slash-satirises Thai idiosyncrasies in all their glory.

» In the Kapoe district of Ranong province, one can find the charming Baan Rai I Arun -- a small, cottage-style resort built from lumber and bamboo directly harvested from the area. Inside, the resort is fitted with a classy array of rustic furniture. Outside, it is surrounded by a garden with mountains in the background, making it feel pleasantly faraway from life beyond the resort.

Beyond the cinematic glitz

» In the past 10 days the seaside city of Cannes has been in the news with noisy fanfare and dazzling colour, led by pictures of bare-shouldered stars sauntering down the red carpet on a daily basis. It happens every year in May, as the world's largest cine-event, the Cannes Film Festival, attracts thousands of journalists, photographers and industry professionals to the Mediterranean resort town made out to become a self-contained universe of glamour. Throughout its 71st edition, which ended yesterday, Cannes once again commanded the attention of the world.

LIFE

The long and short of it

B Magazine, Chanun Poomsawai, Published on 01/04/2018

» 'Go wait under the mango tree over there. You can't miss it," the man pointed to his right after we asked him where we could catch a songthaew to Tha Lane pier. His terse reply reminded us that we were, indeed, in the south of Thailand where men wear their sternness proudly like a prized amulet.
