US fiscal state is everyone's issue

Oped, Paola Subacchi, Published on 28/05/2025

» As Donald Trump's "big, beautiful" tax bill heads to the US Senate, investors everywhere are growing increasingly uneasy. On May 16, the credit-rating agency Moody's downgraded US sovereign debt from its long-held triple-A status to Aa1 -- following similar decisions by Standard & Poor's (in 2011) and Fitch Ratings (2023). Given the sheer volume of US debt -- which now stands at $36 trillion, or 124% of GDP -- and rising interest costs, these institutions have concluded that US debt metrics are no longer in line with those of similarly rated sovereigns.

» One of the defining economic challenges of our time is how to distribute the value generated by groundbreaking technologies, such as generative artificial intelligence and recent innovations in biomedicine and manufacturing. To improve living standards, the benefits of transformative technologies must be widely shared. So far, however, these benefits have been monopolised by a small cadre of tech billionaires.

» The latest attempt by the government to carve out 260,000 rai of Sor Por Kor land plots out of Thap Lan National Park has sparked concerns about the potential misuse of national resources to fulfil the administration's populist promise to hand out land to local villagers.

Premeditated Jerusalem violence

Oped, Orna Sagiv, Published on 12/04/2023

» The recent attacks in Israel demonstrate the consequences of using lies as political instruments, inciting terrorism and generating violence. Last Friday, two sisters, Rina (15) and Maia (20), were murdered when Palestinian terrorists sprayed the family's car with bullets. That evening, a car-ramming attack at Tel Aviv's beachfront promenade killed Alessandro Parini, a 35-year-old lawyer from Rome, and injured seven pedestrians, all tourists from Italy and the United Kingdom.

Oped, Editorial, Published on 09/09/2021

» It is shocking to learn that hackers managed to crack into the database of a state hospital in Phetchabun and make a profit from selling the information of thousands patients on the dark web.
