Those were the days, my friend...

Oped, Roger Crutchley, Published on 14/01/2024

» A fortnight ago I enjoyed Thai hospitality on a very pleasant New Year's Eve at a small gathering in our neighbour's garden in Chaiyaphum. There were about 10 of us and although I was the only non-Thai the hosts insisted on playing western music rather than the mor-lam they almost certainly would have preferred.

The rise of political stress syndrome

Suwitcha Chaiyong, Published on 31/07/2023

» As Thailand's new government formation will significantly impact numerous people, most are following the matter closely. However, the effort to stay informed has caused stress to both supporters of pro-democracy parties and those in favour of the junta and conservative parties.

Overdue return to land of rocket men

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 02/07/2023

» Last weekend I found myself in the Northeastern province of Yasothon for the first time in more than 20 years. It brought back fond memories as there was a time ''Yaso" was something of a home away from home.

OPINION

The need to acknowledge the modern family

Oped, Sirinya Wattanasukchai, Published on 12/08/2020

» What usually comes to mind when you think of family? A social unit comprised of father, mother and child -- or children -- perhaps?

Happy Mother's Day

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 09/08/2019

» Dear Facebook mums, I've seen all of your cute posts regarding your children and motherhood. I just want to say thank you for reminding me how difficult it is to incubate a human being inside you for nine months and raise them afterwards. That's a lifelong commitment, which I have no intention to get myself into.

Old boyz n the Charoen Krung hood

News, Kong Rithdee, Published on 04/08/2018

» The boys once ruled Charoen Krung Road -- the boyz from the hood, sons of Chinese merchants and Muslim roti-makers, rough-around-the-edges teen bred and drilled in the network of sois, who leapt into the Chao Phraya every evening and caught catfish when the river swelled every November, who roamed Bang Rak market when it was still sludgy with vegetable scraps and sneaked into the Prince Rama Theatre when it was still showing, err, adult movies.

OPINION

Construction destruction

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 09/07/2018

» Problems commonly faced by Bangkokians living in small alleys in Bangkok include the lack of footpaths, danger and vibration caused by running lorries and big buses, and the mushrooming of high-rise buildings. To me and my relatives, we encounter most of these problems.

OPINION

A lovely weekend of silly hats, headlines

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 27/05/2018

» I'm not exactly a fan of weddings, but it was almost impossible to escape last week's knees-up at Windsor Castle with ball-by-ball coverage on the major cable stations. Horses, hats, castles, queens, princesses, lords and ladies, dukes and duchesses and Elton John. Even the weather behaved. The Brits still know how to put on a good show. At least it was more entertaining than the FA Cup final which followed.

Put an end to conscription for good of all

News, Surasak Glahan, Published on 23/04/2018

» Last week, I believe it must have been heartbreaking for many Thais who watched a video clip of a young man weeping and almost fainting upon learning he was drafted to serve in the army for two years via the annual conscription round. Yet, I also believe that many of them would oppose any proposal to abolish military conscription, a phenomenon that has long existed by default.
