» As promised last week, we've gone back through the 200 or so singles we reviewed over the past 12 months, narrowing them down to our favourite 25. But before we get on with the first part of the list, here's what we learned in 2019.

Snowed in

» "If I lay here/ If I just lay here/ Would you lie with me/ And just forget the world?" Honestly, it's hard not to automatically think of the devastating chorus of Chasing Cars whenever the band Snow Patrol is mentioned. To a great extent, the Northern Irish/Scottish quintet have American hospital drama Grey's Anatomy to thank for single-handedly popularising the song through one of the series' heart-rending season finales. » 'Go wait under the mango tree over there. You can't miss it," the man pointed to his right after we asked him where we could catch a songthaew to Tha Lane pier. His terse reply reminded us that we were, indeed, in the south of Thailand where men wear their sternness proudly like a prized amulet.

Resigning is for quitters

B Magazine, Andrew Biggs, Published on 18/02/2018

» The truth and the military make strange bedfellows. This is not, necessarily, a savage indictment on Thailand's current military regime. It's true of any military. When ranked from most important to least, qualities such as courage, fortitude, strategy, strength and unity are considered characteristics way, way more important to the military than trifling, annoying tenets such as truth and honesty and, let's be frank, democracy.

LIFE

Cold Comfort

B Magazine, Anucha Charoenpo, Published on 07/01/2018

» It was 7.30am and I queued for a much-needed coffee as commuters bustled around the city's central train station. But even though the day was well under way, the streets outside were cloaked in darkness -- for this was the depths of winter in the capital of Finland.
