Could Trump's tariffs help democratise China?

Oped, Yi Fuxian, Published on 18/01/2025

» Assessments of US President-elect Donald Trump's plans to impose high tariffs on Chinese imports tend to focus on their likely economic consequences. But the tariffs' impact on China's politics might prove to be far more profound.

Australia walks a political tightrope

News, Kavi Chongkittavorn, Published on 04/08/2020

» No country has ever been so loyal to the United States as Australia. The nation has unfailingly supported American foreign policy both during and since the Cold War era, protecting its national interests and security. Unfortunately, the strategic environment that allowed the US-Australia alliance to flourish has gradually eroded over the past two decades.

News, Pankaj Mishra, Published on 12/12/2018

» The arrest last week in Canada of Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Huawei Technologies Co, China's iconic company, is a watershed event. The arrest, made at the behest of the US Justice Department, has roiled markets around the world. It threatens to derail trade talks between the US and China, and to expose American businesses and executives in China to retaliation.
