» At a time of mounting global pressure towards a carbon-free energy system, Indonesia remains committed to coal.

No consensus on cash boost for Japan's military

Oped, Takatoshi Ito, Published on 04/07/2023

» Following Japan's defeat in World War II, the United States took pains to ensure that Japanese militarism could never again pose a threat to the Asia-Pacific or the world. As in Germany, these efforts were profoundly successful. For almost eight decades, Japan has eschewed foreign adventures and violent conflict. Pacifism was not only enshrined in its constitution; it also became deeply rooted in its political culture. By relying on America and its network of alliances and global partnerships, Japan could focus on itself, building economic strength rather than military, emerging as one of the world's largest and most advanced economies.

Threat of air pollution, climate change

Oped, Chris Malley & Diane Archer & Johan Kuylenstierna & Eric Zusman, Published on 10/06/2023

» In some parts of the world, air pollution is called an "invisible killer" because it cannot be seen in the atmosphere but greatly impacts human health. Unfortunately, levels of air pollution in Thailand are often so far in excess of World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines to protect health that the invisible killer is recognisable across urban and rural landscapes. At least 40,000 premature deaths occur in Thailand every year due to air pollution exposure and the respiratory, cardiovascular, lung cancer, and other diseases it causes, making it arguably the single greatest environmental threat to the health and well-being of Thailand's population.

The growing challenge of plastic for Thailand

Oped, Chris Oestereich, Diane Archer & Istvan Rado, Published on 13/05/2023

» The first synthetic plastic, Bakelite, was patented in 1907 by Belgian chemist, Leo Baekeland. Bakelite was used in a variety of iconic products in the first half of the 20th century, but the overall use of plastic was then inconsequential in comparison to what followed.

OPINION

The worldwide population boon

Oped, Beniamino Callegari and Per Espen Stoknes, Published on 31/03/2023

» An easy way to start a long, heated debate is to mention global population. Thomas Malthus famously ignited furious arguments in the 19th century when he warned that, absent fertility-control policies, exponential population growth would outpace improvements in agriculture and cause recurrent bouts of famine and pestilence. Industrialisation would postpone the crisis, but not forever.

Navigating a world in shock

Oped, Bertrand Badré and Yves Tiberghien, Published on 22/09/2022

» Make no mistake: We no longer live in a stable international rules-based order. The days of unipolarity and global liberalism are over, and we are now facing a confluence of shocks unlike anything most of us have seen in our lifetimes.

OPINION

Achieving 'Earth for All' will take collective effort

Oped, Jayati Ghosh, Published on 19/07/2022

» In 1972, the United Nations held its first-ever environmental summit in Stockholm. In the run-up to the event, a group of scientists wrote The Limits to Growth, a report for the Club of Rome that became an unlikely bestseller.

Clean-up action needed

Oped, Editorial, Published on 11/06/2022

» Thailand joined the international community in marking World Environment Day Sunday with not-so-good news. The country's 2022 environment performance index (EPI), prepared by a Yale University research team, slipped 30 notches from last year's 78th ranking to 108th.

Asean responds to invasion of Ukraine

Oped, Kavi Chongkittavorn, Published on 01/03/2022

» Russia's all-out invasion of Ukraine that began on Feb 24 offers valuable lessons for the countries in the region, which have often become the pitched geopolitical battleground for the great powers. From now on, no matter how the Ukraine crisis ends, it will significantly impact the security of Europe and lead to the emergence of a new order to which Asean has to quickly adjust.
