OPINION

Good chance of being caught on the hop

Oped, Roger Crutchley, Published on 22/01/2023

» To mark this weekend's Chinese New Year celebrations for Year of the Rabbit it seems appropriate to dedicate today's column to our cuddly cottontail friends, otherwise known as bunnies. Let's hope not too many of them end up in a pie or stew. As a precaution, just be careful when you order "today's special".

Test case for tolerance

Oped, Editorial, Published on 02/10/2021

» A new set of children's books, titled Waad Wang, which provides information on the other side of the anti-institution movement, has drawn mixed reactions and become another test case for tolerance towards different opinions in our society.

Decarbonisation, the SE Asian way

Oped, Johanna Son, Published on 29/09/2021

» Carbon neutrality is a shared planetary destination, but Southeast Asian countries are laying out their own road maps -- including what some may call detours of sorts -- to getting there in the next three to four decades.

OPINION

Gunboat diplomacy?

Oped, Postbag, Published on 03/03/2021

» The situation in Myanmar would seem to present a golden opportunity for a useful bit of gunboat diplomacy. What would be the likely result of an American carrier task force standing off the coast in the Gulf of Martaban or Indian Ocean? Perhaps joined by the new British aircraft carrier and French naval assets. Of course it is out of the question for a foreign invasion on the ground. However the Myanmar military might have cause to think again if faced with the threat of having its assets and installations reduced by air power. Including its small air force and command and control capability.

OPINION

A pointless wait

Oped, Postbag, Published on 30/09/2020

» Re: "Nida poll a wake-up call", (Editorial, Sept 29), I think if it is incumbent upon veteran politicians and Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha "to overhaul the system and show us democracy will be a long lasting solution for the country" we will be waiting a long, long time. In case you haven't noticed, this is a selfish, self-righteous group who think they are entitled to their power by virtue of their seniority/longevity and you'd best learn your place or leave this country. They have no intention of sharing their power with anyone but themselves and probably will be in power until they die.
