Will gentrification respect city's people?

Oped, Kong Rithdee, Published on 28/06/2023

» We've lived for over a century in the shadow of grandeur: near the Customs House, known to Thais as rongpasi. "We" means my maternal family and the community of Haroon Mosque. Each day before sunrise, the muezzin's sing-song call rings through the neighbourhood, carried on the river wind towards the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, the French Embassy and Assumption Cathedral.

Weed bounty may go to pot

Oped, Editorial, Published on 07/03/2023

» Chuvit Kamolvisit's latest controversial revelations that cast a further shadow over the government's cannabis liberalisation policy engineered by the Bhumjaithai Party should serve as a warning over the monitoring of such dispensaries, which have mushroomed in number after the government removed cannabis from the Category 5 list of narcotics in the Royal Gazette on June 9 last year.

Thai HIV response faces setback

Oped, Stephen Mills, Published on 21/02/2023

» Thailand was a model for how a country should respond to the HIV epidemic. Whenever there was an HIV innovation -- whether it be a drug or a behavioural approach -- Thailand would be one of the first countries to adopt it. This began with the 100% Condom Programme in the early 1990s and continued all the way to 2016, when WHO declared that Thailand was the first country in Asia to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of both HIV and syphilis, an impressive feat many countries are still hard-pressed to mimic. Thailand became one of the first middle-income countries in 2014 to embrace pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) by supporting community-based organisations (CBOs) to test key populations, such as men who have sex with men and transgendered individuals, for HIV and provide this critical drug to them.

Profiting on faith

Oped, Postbag, Published on 27/08/2022

» Re: “Keeping the faith”, (Business, Aug 22). Absent any supporting statistics, let us take it on faith as reported that “Large numbers of Thais are turning to superstition to help make sense of an increasingly fraught and unstable world”. But is that really an excuse for business to cash in by pandering to wild claims of dubious merit?
