Apple sets sights on VR market

Life, James Hein, Published on 21/06/2023

» The biggest announcement of the past week or two was the Apple Vision Pro VR system. There has been so much on this recently. The quick summary is -- two 4K eyepieces, no controllers required and it can replace your TV and computer monitors. I was more interested in the battery life being two hours, or if you were using them, not enough for the full Apple presentation. The price is also an amazing US$3,500 in America so out of the range of most people. One argument is that by the time you don't need to pay for a TV upgrade or new monitors it is worth the investment. My counter is if you have a four-person household that price becomes $14,000, a lot more than the cost of a new TV. Oh, and you can mostly only use it with Apple kit which really limits options.

'Back to the future' phone

Life, Komsan Jandamit, Published on 08/09/2021

» I was born in the late 70s and during my teenage years, Nokia flip-phones were a thing. I owned a few and my friends had them too. They were cool and trendy and you could slam the phone shut to end calls, which was satisfying (especially when you had an argument with someone). However, along came the iPhone in 2007 and ended the flip-phone trend. In 2021, the flip-phone trend is in again with new foldable screen tech and the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 5G.

The cloud calls, banks don't hear

Life, James Hein, Published on 07/07/2021

» Is the industry rushing too quickly into the clouds? Cloud computing has been expanding steadily over the past few years and is starting to dominate as the primary platform for many organisations. Providers love it because it allows them to charge a service-based fee instead of a once-off payment for a product. There are rumours that Microsoft through Windows 11 will push to have a similar approach for their next version.

The 'fan edition' phone for non-Samsung fans

Life, Komsan Jandamit, Published on 02/12/2020

» This review hurts me personally because I paid a lot of money and got myself a Samsung Galaxy S20+ around mid-year. Now, the newly-released S20 FE 5G is cheaper, faster and has all the same Samsung features with a set of slightly inferior cameras at around half the price.

Top of the food chain

Ultra big, ultra price

» Unmoved by the current Covid-19 crisis, Samsung has brought their 2020 big boy to the market with bigger specs and an even bigger price tag.

Protecting the jewels

Life, James Hein, Published on 11/03/2020

» A while back I looked at the LG V20 as a new phone option but I ended up getting the latest Samsung. The next LG top-end model is the V60 ThinQ. Its 5000 mAh battery offers a lot of battery life and will eventually be used by the Samsung S20. It will come with a 17.2cm edge-to-edge screen and unlike the S20 will retain the headphone jack. It also supports a clip on second screen but with a hinge between them. This allows two apps to run side by side, useful in a number of circumstances. It has 8K video recording but not the 10x optical zoom found in the top end S20. Pricing is expected to be less than the S20 range. When you're buying a new phone these days there are a lot of options so find the features and price point that suits you. After that it probably comes down to the colour of the case.

A new era for Windows?

Life, James Hein, Published on 29/01/2020

» When you read this, Windows 7 will have reached its end of support, but it still has about 27% of the current market share on Windows desktops. The Microsoft term "end of support" refers to technical support and security updates/fixes, and it means that over time your operating system will become less secure and more open to attack by malware.
