The rise of consumer cryptocurrency

News, Steve Kaczynski and Scott Duke Kominers, Published on 26/02/2024

» Since its inception with the launch of Bitcoin in 2008, blockchain technology has gone through numerous cycles of public attention. Over time, growing interest and investment in the best-known cryptocurrencies has led to greater acceptance, as highlighted by the US Securities and Exchange Commission's approval of a spot Bitcoin ETF (exchange-traded fund) in January. While blockchains and their associated "crypto" assets have yet to be adopted by a truly broad base of consumers, that is starting to change, owing to a shift in how these technologies are being used.

Kardashian's Skims could be making a bad bet

News, Leticia Miranda, Published on 31/10/2023

» Kim Kardashian was in the news again this week. Not for whomever she's dating or some controversial social media post. Instead, it was for her intimates and shapewear brand Skims, which launched a new men's line, which includes underwear, tees and socks. The obvious question posed to Kardashian has been: When are you coming out with a men's shapewear line? It's "forthcoming", but not a part of the inaugural line. Smart move, Keeks. Shapewear for men is set up to fail.

Nike shoes aren't performance-enhancing drugs

News, Adam Minter, Published on 24/10/2023

» World records in marathons have toppled like track hurdles in recent weeks. Tigst Assefa, the new women's record holder, beat the old one by more than two minutes. Kelvin Kiptum, the latest men's record holder, took 34 seconds off his predecessor's time. These are astonishing accomplishments. But not everybody is crediting the athletes. Instead, critics argue that Assefa and Kiptum couldn't have run at top speeds without a new generation of high-performance "super shoes". Some go so far as to equate the souped-up shoes to performance-enhancing drugs.

News, Ben Ho, Published on 04/04/2022

» Twitter recently added a feature that lets users identify themselves with an NFT picture, distinguished by a new hexagonal border, rather than just a regular profile photo. An NFT (short for non-fungible token) is a digital commodity, typically an image, whose ownership is recorded on a ledger stored on a blockchain.

Vietnam's economy comes of age

News, Nehginpao Kipgen & Akash Sahu, Published on 23/12/2019

» Vietnam in Southeast Asia is one of the best growing economies in the region. The country has become an attractive destination for investment from all over the globe. The trade wars between the US and China have certainly contributed to this outcome. Since the US has stopped cooperating with China in a number of industries, the profitability of manufacturing in China has fallen. As the general living standard has also increased, labour is cheaply available elsewhere. This has motivated manufacturers to find cheaper destinations, such as Vietnam.

Global warning

News, Postbag, Published on 25/05/2019

» I heard some Thai youth were due to protest older people's inaction in this country on global warming yesterday in Bangkok. Given the horrors that await them if little or nothing is done by our leaders, I hope they are successful in getting some action from people who seem totally oblivious to the problem, or are too old or inflexible to care.
