LIFE

When two genres collide

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 21/03/2025

» I am always intrigued when filmmakers attempt to blend two polar opposite genres -- such as horror and comedy -- just to see how it turns out. These films can either be a surprising hit or an awkward miss. In the case of The Parenting, the latest comedy-horror offering from MAX, I'd say it unfortunately leans closer to the miss side. While it has a decent premise and some entertaining moments, the overall execution falls flat, making it feel more like a missed opportunity than a memorable film.

Tranquil beauty

» A powerful earthquake that struck the northwest of Kathmandu in 2015 sent a ripple of destruction through the country. Not far from its epicentre, Bhaktapur bore the brunt of the natural disaster that damaged houses and religious structures. After years of reconstruction, despite lingering signs of ruin, this ancient town continues to preserve harmony between the old and the new.

Hear her roar

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 26/05/2023

» The image of a girl taking off her hijab is wrought with cinematic symbolism. Kamila Andini shows it in her Indonesian film Yuni (2021); Hesome Chemamah in his Thai short I'm Not Your F*cking Stereotype (2019); Ana Lily Amirpour in the Iranian vampire film A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night (2014). Subversion? Provocation? Liberation? At this year's Cannes Film Festival, we see that image in Amanda Nell Eu's Tiger Stripes, a work as playful as it is potent in its portrayal of adolescence and what it entails for a young woman's body.

LIFE

Into the devil's lair

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 05/11/2021

» Like a session of cinematic séance, Rang Zong (The Medium) channels a cemetery-sized roll call of classic horror elements. The film, recently picked as Thailand's representative for the Oscar's International Feature, is proudly possessed by the ghosts of The Exorcist, The Blair Witch Project, the Paranormal Activity franchise, and Ari Aster's Midsommar, but with Southeast Asia's earthy voodooism, plus a serving of Korean-style blood-and-viscera gore as well as an icing of zombie scare-aesthetics. It's a full-course buffet of fright tricks, complete with an apocalyptic, 30-minute-long exorcism orgy that leaves no spell unuttered and no human unpossessed. All of this is couched in a faux-documentary setup, with handheld shots, grainy CCTV footage and characters speaking directly to the camera.

LIFE

Third time unlucky

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 25/06/2021

» Due to the pandemic's lasting impact, the release date in Thailand for the highly-anticipated third instalment in The Conjuring franchise, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, was delayed several times. Originally meant to hit theatres last year, the film was postponed several times before finding a new date earlier this month. Now that Thai cinemas outside Bangkok are allowed to reopen, The Devil Made Me Do It is playing on the big screen and it will eventually be streamed on HBO GO as well.

Stay safe in style

» Covid-19 doesn't only hurt tourism in Thailand. Many communities which normally earn a good income by selling products and souvenirs made from their distinctive fabrics are also badly affected.

Cheap scares

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 15/03/2019

» It's quite rare that a film from Taiwan would make it to Thai cinemas, but The Tag-Along: Devil Fish is an exception, as the film was picked up by Malaysia-based distributor Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) to be a part of the 10 territories of Southeast Asia.

Scala shows a true horror classic

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 26/10/2018

» The mother (or daughter?) of all antichrist misdemeanours returns. On Oct 31 -- Halloween night -- The Exorcist will soil the Scala with its ineffaceable green puke, God-denouncing expletives and Satanic rebellion led by Linda Blair, strapped to her bed and yet still cussing, hurting, levitating.
