Stats don't add up

Oped, Postbag, Published on 08/05/2024

» Re: "Astra jab blood clots 'rare' insists institute", (BP, May 4). One in 10 million in Thailand and one in 100,000 in the UK? How can the National Vaccine Institute possibly reconcile such a large sigma statistical anomaly and claim the risk of vaccine-induced blood clots is extremely rare in Thailand while it is criminally deadly in the UK? Worldwide, young people have been harmed and have died from blood clots -- a phenomenon that has never before been seen in these huge numbers.

US move affects Africa's vax drive

Oped, Ebere Okereke, Published on 07/06/2022

» The US Food and Drug Administration's recent decision to limit the use of the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine to adults who cannot or will not get another vaccine will have profound consequences for African countries. The FDA said its move reflected the risk that the vaccine might cause a rare blood-clotting syndrome. But the decision shows that, even after two years of the pandemic, the needs of people in low- and middle-income countries, and Africans in particular, remain an afterthought for leading global health authorities.

Moral conundrum

Oped, Postbag, Published on 15/01/2022

» Re: "Bill on media council gets cabinet nod," (BP, Jan 13). When we read in "Bill on media council gets cabinet nod" that "the exercise of media freedoms must not infringe on social mores", all who value good public morals will be deeply concerned. This must be so since being a social mores never has and cannot of itself guarantee that any belief, custom, or attitude is morally good.

Brazil's pioneering solution to vaccine shortages

Oped, Joseph E Stiglitz, Achal Prabhala & Felipe Carvalho, Published on 06/12/2021

» The World Trade Organization was expected to meet the past week to consider a proposal that has been languishing for the past year: a temporary waiver of pharmaceutical intellectual property during the pandemic to allow poor countries to make many of the same tests, treatments, and vaccines that rich countries have had throughout the pandemic. Yet in a cruel reminder of the urgency of the problem, the WTO meeting was postponed, owing to the Omicron variant, detected by scientists in South Africa (though precisely where it originated remains unclear).
