A word that has me at sixes and sevens

Roger Crutchley, Published on 09/11/2025

» I try to keep up with the ever-evolving English language but after seeing the buzzwords provided by Dictionary.com this week I fear I am being left way behind.

Farewell to two fine former colleagues

Roger Crutchley, Published on 10/12/2023

» Far too many of my former Bangkok Post colleagues have passed away this year and this week things got even worse with two more old pals gone.

OPINION

Words you don't really want to hear

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 04/12/2022

» It's that time of the year when publishers of major dictionaries bombard us with what they regard as the "words of the year". They rarely agree on the same offering, but there is one common theme -- nearly all words selected are frankly rather depressing.

The million-baht 'misunderstanding'

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 04/09/2022

Called "Wort des Jahres", this German tradition began in 1971.

Immigration blues

News, Postbag, Published on 22/08/2019

» It seems to me that Thai Immigration has got itself into an awful mess because it refuses to acknowledge a few simple truths. According to Merriam-Webster an immigrant is "a person who comes to a country to take up permanent residence". Since 1991 I have had only one home, a wife, a child and a house, all in Thailand and I have in effect been a resident since that time.
