SE Asia dabbles with change

News, Editorial, Published on 28/08/2022

» It may only be the end of August, but this year has seen some major announcements in Southeast Asia that signal a major shift is taking place in the deeply-conservative region. But do the changes affect reality on a deeper level, or merely cement the status quo?

Can't beat question time in the 'bear pit'

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 06/02/2022

» While normally steering well clear of British politics I admit to having enjoyed recent live TV sessions of the UK Parliament. The weekly Prime Minister's Question Time (PMQ) held on Wednesdays is far more entertaining than any soap opera. Witnessing the verbal jousting as the PM attempts to side-step a withering grilling is sheer theatre. It is almost like being the accused in the dock at a court hearing.

A European Germany, Not a German Europe

News, By Gwynne Dyer, Published on 10/11/2019

» The fall of the Berlin Wall, 30 years ago on Nov 9, was one of the best parties I ever went to, and certainly the longest. But when I finally sobered up, it was also quite frightening, because nobody knew what was coming out of the box next.

At Hyundai, it's still very much a man's world

News, Anjani Trivedi, Published on 21/03/2019

» Shame. One of the world's biggest investors and some of the most influential proxy advisory firms just stuck another nail in the coffin of corporate governance reform in South Korea.

News that is driving us all up the wall

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 20/01/2019

» Just as most Brits must be sick to death of ever hearing the word Brexit, across the Pond one suspects the majority of Americans have also had more than their fill of The Wall. You can't escape those dreaded words even here in Thailand. Switch on the satellite news and you will be bombarded by the two topics, analysed by every expert in the world, most of whom happen to have just written a book on the subject.

OPINION

Challenging the norms of capitalism

News, Pankaj Mishra, Published on 27/12/2018

» We live in an age of political earthquakes: That much, at least, seemed clear from newspaper headlines nearly every day of 2018. But intellectual tectonic plates were also shifting throughout the year, with ideas once dismissed as the ravings of the loony left breaking into the mainstream.

Xi's not for turning? Don't be so sure

News, Andrew Browne, Published on 05/12/2018

» As president-for-life, China's Xi Jinping is neither bound by rules nor limited by rivals. He has upended a careful political balance by concentrating power in his own hands, and overturned a cautious approach to foreign policy, while throwing in jail anyone he views as a threat. China's most dominant leader since Mao Zedong now has 90 days to head off an all-out trade war with the US provoked, in part, by his own mercantilist policies. Can anybody convince him to make a U-turn?

Interpol saga won't just hurt China

News, Adam Minter, Published on 11/10/2018

» The last message that now former Interpol president Meng Hongwei sent to his wife was an emoji depicting a knife. Soon after, he disappeared into China's feared and opaque Ministry of Public Security, the subject of a corruption investigation about which no details have been revealed.

Beware the tears of a crocodile

News, Kong Rithdee, Published on 09/06/2018

» 'The tears were obviously theatrics. They're political tears. Stop crying and stop trying to fool the people. Stop using the same trick over and over for your political gains."
