COP30 must do good, not just avoid harm

News, Eileen Mairena Cunningham, Published on 17/11/2025

» When indigenous peoples are mentioned in the context of climate change, my mind immediately goes to images of my grandmother's roofless and flooded house, destroyed by a Category 5 hurricane and a Category 4 storm in quick succession.

Feb 28 was the day diplomacy died

News, Philip Cunningham, Published on 03/03/2025

» What do we make of the Oval Office meltdown that led to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky being politically ambushed and then rushed out of the White House? How do we best interpret Donald Trump's rude, bullying behaviour, reinforced by his trusty sidekick Vice President JD Vance?

Like bamboo swaying in the wind

News, Philip J Cunningham, Published on 18/11/2024

» When a powerful country comes courting, a smaller country is wise not to reject the courtship out of hand, even if it isn't fully swayed or convinced. I'm with the band -- how music made me British

News, Howard Chua-Eoan, Published on 31/08/2024

» 'Wonderwall' is all I remember. The rest of Oasis is a blur to me. I was still living in New York City when the band had their global breakthrough -- and that song was everywhere. From the album (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, it's one of the few mid-1990s songs whose lyrics this Boomer can remember. I admired its Beatles-like off-kilter poetics, its love-will-save-the-day (if not, maybe it'll just save me) sentimentality. And Liam Gallagher's voice, while not beautiful, was pure plaintive Britpop, a plangent inflexion echoing from as far back as 1962's Love Me Do by John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

Uranium's epic rally says lots about the world

News, Liam Denning, Published on 30/11/2023

» Uranium offers a perfect distillation of a world that is heating up and a world order that is breaking down. Plus a market eager to capitalise on both.

Opec seeks stability via 'quake'

News, Liam Denning, Published on 10/04/2023

» Opec+ defends its surprise supply cut as being aimed at oil market "stability." One can only imagine the glum faces as they realised they had instead teed-up an 8% price spike. Oh well, at least the extra money will offer some small consolation.
