When journalism still exists -- but no longer matters

News, Carla Norrlöf, Published on 14/02/2026

» 'Democracy Dies in Darkness" became the motto of the Washington Post in 2017, four years after Jeff Bezos, the Amazon founder and one of the world's richest men, purchased the newspaper. Today, however, Mr Bezos, who has throttled the Post's opinion page and now slashed the newspaper's staff, seems determined to demonstrate that a free press, an essential component of democracy, can be killed off in broad daylight.

Simone Biles is redefining athletic resilience

News, Lisa Jarvis, Published on 31/07/2024

» With the Olympics underway in Paris, the world has a front seat to something truly magical: the gravity-defying skills of US gymnast Simone Biles. And although I'm, of course, looking forward to watching her attempt the Yurchenko double pike vault -- a jump she is the only woman to even attempt in competition, and which she smashed during practice in Paris last week -- I'm really just glad to see her back in a leotard, beaming while high-fiving her teammates.

The killing of innocents in Israel and Gaza

News, Peter Singer, Published on 09/01/2024

» Last month, I was invited to join other Princeton University academics in viewing a compilation of raw footage from GoPro cameras carried by Hamas gunmen killing civilians in Israel on Oct 7. Additional video and audio material came from dashboard cameras, traffic cameras, phone intercepts, and victims' phones. The invitation carried a warning that the footage would show horrific violence and murder.

Asean's fight on haze needs rethink

News, Apichai Sunchindah, Larry Maramis and Helena Varkkey, Published on 08/05/2023

» Recent land and forest fires have brought haze back after several years of relatively clear skies, which coincided with Covid-19 slowdowns.

A grim year rescued by Paddington Bear

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 25/12/2022

» It is customary at this time of the year to take a not-too-serious look back at the events of the past 12 months. It is not that easy because it's been a pretty miserable year highlighted by the madness of the war in Ukraine.

Crypto's path to deep crisis is well-worn

News, Xavier Vives, Published on 05/12/2022

» Swiftly rising interest rates have punctured the cryptocurrency bubble, exposing fragility, bad governance and even fraud in many corners, most notably at the crypto exchange FTX. And FTX's spectacular collapse comes on the heels of other recent failures in the cryptosphere, such as Terra-Luna, Three Arrows Capital or Voyager Digital. No one should be surprised -- not even at how many people were surprised.

Nuan is the cat's whiskers at Apec

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 20/11/2022

» The most important news emerging from the Apec summit in Bangkok is that it looks like Downing Street's Larry the Cat has finally got some competition in the ranks of feline celebrities. Catching the eye in the Big Mango this week has been Nuan -- a lady cat who has been adopted as the unofficial mascot for the Apec meet.

The big black door which has no keys

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 30/10/2022

» In recent weeks whenever I have switched on the TV news bulletins I seem to have been greeted by the sight of the imposing black door at No 10 Downing Street. It must be the most photographed door in history.

OPINION

A good time to 'keep calm and carry on'

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 23/10/2022

» There is definitely a "shifting the deckchairs on the Titanic" feel to the situation in Britain at the moment. If recent political events had been presented as a soap opera script it would have been rejected for being totally unbelievable.
