It's the economic history, stupid

Oped, Iker Saitua, Published on 14/01/2026

» Every year, I walk into a first-year lecture hall in Bilbao at the University of the Basque Country (EHU) and watch shoulders slump. The title of the course I'm teaching -- "Economic History" -- draws a similarly dejected reaction from my students: "Meh." "Boooring." "What's this even for?" Some call it "the history class", as if it belonged to another century.

Resetting Thailand-Cambodia relations

Oped, Kavi Chongkittavorn, Published on 21/10/2025

» After three months of catastrophic relations, Thailand and Cambodia are starting to turn confrontation into cooperation, but such efforts will be obstructed by on-the-ground realities and invisible barriers.

Gambling on Singapore's model

Oped, Kevin Clayton, Published on 26/06/2025

» Hindsight can help define the future. In 2005, Singapore was coming to terms with a need to reinvent itself as a tourism attraction in the face of plummeting arrival numbers and increasing regional competition. This was no time to feel intimidated but to strike out and be inventive.

Oped, Laurence Tubiana & Kevin P Gallagher, Published on 19/12/2023

» With their agreement at COP28 to "transition away from fossil fuels in energy systems", countries have made genuine progress on tackling climate change. But there is still much to do to mobilise the level of financing needed to turn the commitment into reality. International organisations -- especially the International Monetary Fund -- must step up. Though the IMF was relatively slow off the mark in the race to combat climate change, it has made great strides under Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. But it must take its climate leadership much further.

Oped, Chang-Tai Hsieh & Jason Hsu, Published on 20/04/2023

» The stern warnings issued by China ahead of Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen's tour of the US and Central America have highlighted the threat that intensifying Chinese pressure poses to the island's security and stability. But the warnings also underscored the degree to which the US efforts to "on-shore" semiconductor manufacturing could cripple Taiwan's economy at a critical time.

Too late for turtles

Oped, Postbag, Published on 04/02/2023

» Re: “Recycle to save sea life, dept urges”, (BP, Feb 2). The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) is asking us to recycle our plastic waste to help save sea life, but unfortunately too late for the 11 young turtles that died from ingested plastic mistaken for food in the 700-metre floating garbage patch off the Chon Buri coast.

Keys to sustainable growth

Oped, Sven Smit, Anu Madgavkar & Kevin Russell, Published on 19/01/2023

» In November, hundreds of corporate CEOs and heads of state convened in Bali, Indonesia, for the B20 global business summit. The topics on the agenda this year revolved around three interconnected goals: sustainability, inclusion and economic growth.
