Impacts of Iran war on Southeast Asia

Oped, Thitinan Pongsudhirak, Published on 20/03/2026

» For the most part, Southeast Asia as a region has taken a neutral stance toward the joint attack between the United States and Israel against the Islamic Republic of Iran. Even the Philippines and Thailand, two formal US treaty allies, have distanced themselves, calling for restraint and de-escalation.

Peepo's story exposes lack of child support

Oped, Karnjana Karnjanatawe, Published on 20/03/2026

» The story of a 13-year-old boy in Nakhon Si Thammarat who lived on the streets, was hit by a car, and later rebuilt his life has gone viral. Yet the life of Peepo -- as the boy is called by the media -- offers not just inspiration. His story exposes years of parental neglect and a lack of state mechanisms to help abandoned children.

Loving the lizards

Thai neutrality key as Mideast war escalates

Oped, Anucha Charoenpo, Published on 13/03/2026

» The ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel is causing widespread concern beyond the Middle East. Thailand, like many other nations, has expressed concern about the risks of terrorism and sabotage that could threaten both citizens and foreign nationals within its borders.

OPINION

Echoes ignored

Oped, Postbag, Published on 13/03/2026

» Re: "With Iran war, US is alone", (World, March 6). The Deputy Director of the German Marshall Fund, Kristina Kausch, is upset that US President Donald Trump has not sought the world's approval in his quest to destroy Iran's military abilities and for the removal of its genocidal dictatorship. One which screams daily: "Death to Israel" and "Death to America". (Time Off, Bangkok Post, March 8).

No shield for tainted MP

Oped, Editorial, Published on 12/03/2026

» As parliament is set to convene on Saturday, it is clear that Chonnaput Naksua, a Klatham MP for Songkhla, who is implicated in an online gambling and money-laundering network, will seek parliamentary immunity as he looks to take part in the session. His participation will be a crucial test for the legislative branch.

Are Thai women truly equal?

Oped, Thunpicha Greigarn, Published on 12/03/2026

» Do you think gender equality is still an issue in Thailand? Whether the answer is yes or no, explaining why can be surprisingly difficult.

OPINION

Poor timing

Oped, Postbag, Published on 12/03/2026

» I was stunned by the airing of American Psycho (unedited version, sic) at 12.15pm on True Visions Channel 228. This movie is only suitable for late-night viewing (parents note) at best, given its horrific and lewd content, although we are assured by film critics that it is a satire of contemporary society. Given ongoing developments, this seems to be true. It's going to get a remake too, God help us.

OPINION

Cultural eclipse

Oped, Editorial, Published on 11/03/2026

» The notion of performing major surgery at the Ministry of Tourism and Sports is welcome news. The idea of merging tourism with the Ministry of Culture to create a new ministry that also oversees sports is the brainchild of Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.
