» Over the course of nearly a decade, we have on more than one occasion gushed about how UK outfit Wild Beasts were top-shelf purveyors of erudite indie-rock. Even though they regrettably called it quits in 2017, they remain one of the very few rock bands who managed to strike an impeccable balance between indie and art-rock. Ranging from baroque to barbaric, their five-album discography charts leftfield territories with strutting confidence. Not many rock bands are able to incorporate geeky literary allusions into their songwriting and still look pretty damn cool doing it.

But what really sets BLACKPINK apart from their peers is their collective cosmopolitan edge -- Jisoo representing Korea, Lisa bringing the spicy Thai flavours and New Zealand-born, Australia-raised Rosé and New Zealand-raised Jennie completing the picture with their multicultural upbringing. Singing and rapping in Korean, Japanese and English, they're probably the first all-female idol group to have amassed an army of fans, endearingly known as "blinks", not only from Asia, but also North America and elsewhere, in just a few years.

» 'I'm not dancing, I'm fighting/ I'm not shining, I'm burning," Tirzah Mastin sings over the sparse rigidity of four-to-the-floor beats on the title track off her 2013's debut I'm Not Dancing EP. This was her way of rebelling against the EDM trends in pop music -- an admirably bold statement coming from someone who was just starting out. Hailing from Essex, Mastin operates mononymously as Tirzah. Under that moniker she explores her penchant for all things leftfield, fusing post-grime and futuristic R&B with experimental pop -- all courtesy of her school pal producer Mica Levi.
