Suvarnabhumi can shine again

» When it was opened to the public in 2006, Suvarnabhumi Airport reflected the mood and aspirations of the entire nation. The airport's main terminal -- a sprawling glass-and-steel structure that covered an area of about 500,000 square metres before its subsequent expansions -- was designed to look like a floating pavilion, its undulating canopy creating an illusion of space. The airport's design language is worlds apart from Don Mueang's, and the message to arriving passengers that Thailand, like its gleaming, brand-new airport, is open and ready to take a step into modernity was clear.

» The assassination of former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe is as sad as it is shocking. For Japanese of my generation, the tragedy calls to mind US President John F Kennedy's assassination in 1963 and the attempted assassination of Abe's grandfather, Japanese Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi, who was stabbed in 1960 after his government overcame parliamentary resistance to secure passage of the US-Japan Security Treaty.

» On my last day of self-quarantine, a nurse from a public health centre in my neighbourhood called me, checking if I had any symptoms or signs of Covid-19. She was nice, trying to collect all the necessary information to make sure I am free of the virus. Afterwards, the centre will issue me a certificate saying that I've completed the home-quarantine and can resume my normal life.

» In my opinion, Thailand has invested too much on the wrong types of infrastructure, namely the rail mass transit system and high-speed train system. These systems, despite their usefulness, are far from being cost-effective and certainly are not affordable. The financial burden of having these systems not only involves the cost of building infrastructure, but the operating expenses as well.
