LIFE

A place under the sun

Guru, Worada Elstow, Published on 25/03/2022

» Though Thailand has a reputation of being accepting of the LGBTQI+ community, legal rights haven't been extended, with existing discrimination and the almost daily fight to be treated as equals continuing. To commemorate Transgender Day of Visibility, a day dedicated to recognising the resilience and accomplishments of the transgender community, which is on March 31, Guru speaks with trans individuals about navigating their lives in the professional world.

Never chim, never know

Guru, Nianne-Lynn Hendricks, Published on 05/03/2021

» The newest design-centric all-day dining and art centre, Chim Chim is on the ground floor of Siam@Siam Design Hotel, giving a blend of laid-back, tropical vibe and an artist loft. Chim Chim offers wood-fired oven pizzas, freshly-roasted coffee, comfort food like burgers, sandwiches, pastas and creative beverages. Its name refers to the Thai word chim, which means to taste. Its artsy vibe is a nod to the artsy-area they are in (BACC is nearby). All the furniture and design is custom made, with prints from Jim Thompson.

Guru awards 2020

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 18/12/2020

» A lot has happened in 2020. From the pandemic to protests, the year has had a flurry of events, good and bad (perhaps mostly bad). Paradoxically, it seems that 2020 lasted longer than it should and we all can't wait for it to be over, but at the same time it also seemed like we just went into quarantine yesterday. We're all looking forward to the year that's ahead and leave 2020 behind, but before we do, let's take a look at the year that's been and determine which blunders, skills and mascots are worthy of recognition.

Whether it's momos that brings to mind Himalayan snow-capped mountains or feijoada that takes you to a beach in Rio, there's something for everyone. Guru presents a list of restaurants that are your tickets to flavour town.

» - Taste the recipes of chef Ian Kittichai (Pongtawat Chalerm-kittichai) from the kitchen of Issaya Siamese Club (fb.com/issayasiameseclub) at home. The delivery menu is divided into several sections from starters to desserts to wines, and even includes set menus for up to 10 people. You know how chef Ian puts his own spin on things. Think krathong thong but with yellowfin tuna instead of minced pork. Or khao soi with osso buco instead of chicken leg. Call 062-750-9900 on any days of the week from 11.30am-10pm to order directly from the restaurant and enjoy 20% off the a la carte menu. Free delivery for addresses in Sathon, Bang Rak, Klong Toey, Pathumwan and Wattana. B100 delivery fee applies to addresses in other districts of Bangkok.

Heartwarming meals at Jamaican Eatz

Guru, Kankanok Wichiantanon, Published on 17/01/2020

» Unlike most Jamaican-themed bars or restaurants, which serve what are essentially Thai dishes modified with a "Jamaican twist", Jamaican Eatz delivers the real deal, plus a few other delights from the Caribbean. And they've recently added a few new dishes to their Ellsie Boutique Mall, Phrom Phong branch.

Lick good

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 27/09/2019

» In the day and age of convenience and apps, it's so easy to get everything with just a simple click, so much so that perhaps the only thing we complain about now is the fact that we have to walk outside to meet the delivery guy. Not that we need anymore reason to stay inside (as if an introvert like me is trying to find reasons to go out and socialise), Lick BKK could probably be another incentive to simply lock yourself in a room as you chow down on their signature offering -- burgers. And who doesn't love being antisocial while scarfing down a good burger anyway?
