OPINION

Why is everyone becoming so self-righteous?

Oped, Steven Sloman, Published on 18/09/2025

» It feels increasingly difficult nowadays to avoid righteousness; or, worse, self-righteousness. We are constantly being told what to do by those who supposedly have seen the light. For example, I was recently scolded by a colleague for suggesting that my own employer should aim to hire the best people, regardless of their sex or race. I was struck by the confidence that this person felt in instructing me on what I should value; it felt high-handed and uninformed.

Whoever takes office will inherit a mess

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 15/06/2023

» The election result is clear and the MOU to form a 312-seat government in the 500-seat parliament is agreed. But who will lead Thailand and its economy for the next four years is unclear. Whether it will be a pro-equality government, pro-growth government, or even a pro-big-spending government remains in doubt.

Delivering justice to food deliverers

Oped, Urairat Jantarasiri, Published on 24/05/2023

» Motorcycle riders in bright jackets weaving through traffic to deliver meals to their customers are a common sight on city streets. They are the workhorses of Thailand's booming gig economy. Yet they work without any basic labour rights or protection.

OPINION

Soldiers are not servants

Oped, Editorial, Published on 06/05/2023

» The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has done the country and the Thai armed forces a great service in recommending that the military brings to an end the use of conscripts as personal employees of higher-ranking officers within 90 days. Rights commissioners made a loud and clear official statement last week that the practice is a human rights violation.
