OPINION

Nothing wrong with snoozing in Snoring

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 01/08/2021

» One of the first things a visitor to Thailand is asked is probably what town they come from back home. My response of Reading invariably brings blank looks, so I usually add "just west of London" which admittedly doesn't make things any clearer. It would be nice if I came from a place that sounded a trifle more intriguing, such as the wonderful Nempnett Thrubwell in Somerset or Booby Dingle in Herefordshire.

Between you, me and the lamp post

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 27/06/2021

» Over the years we've had allegations of malfeasance concerning the whole spectrum of life in Thailand. Among the more unlikely cases have been claims of dubious goings on concerning purchases of such items as school pianos, parliament clocks, cows and even kindergarten toys.

'King of fruits' is nothing to sniff at

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 13/06/2021

» Most people who have a functioning hooter will be well aware we are in the middle of the durian season. I got a timely reminder when my wife returned triumphantly from a day trip to the orchards of Nakhon Nayok last weekend laden with what is called the "king of fruits''. It is also the smelliest of fruits, prompting a brisk trade in T-shirts bearing the message "tastes like heaven and smells like hell".

OPINION

Well, it's only a slogan after all

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 24/05/2020

» The Tourism Authority of Thailand has decreed that the "Amazing Thailand" slogan will need rebranding once the coronavirus situation is sorted out. So from October, we will be treated to "Amazing Trusted Thailand", emphasising safety and aimed at "high-end" tourists. Well-intentioned as it may be, this new slogan doesn't exactly roll off the tongue and the middle word may prompt a few wry smiles.

The girl from the Black Country

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 01/03/2020

» My thanks to readers who pointed out that Janice Nicholls, who featured in last week's column, did not have a Brummie accent at all, but a Black Country lilt, hailing from Wednesbury, just west of Birmingham.

OPINION

Linking Covid-19 and 'Parasite'

News, Apichai Sunchindah, Published on 21/02/2020

» The ongoing outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 or Covid-19, which originated in China over two months ago and has been spreading around the world has claimed at least 2,100 human lives with another 70,000 laboratory-confirmed cases -- mostly in China.

OPINION

A triumph of imagination over intelligence

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 16/02/2020

» I am not a huge fan of Valentine's Day, but considering the awful events of recent weeks, a bit of "love", however contrived, was a welcome break from the daily diet of depressing news. So this week, it feels like an appropriate time to dwell on matters of the heart, as long as it is not a cardiac arrest.

OPINION

Poor meant to suffer

News, Postbag, Published on 21/09/2019

» Re: "Ubon flood saga catches govt napping", (Opinion, Sept 20). The whole problem has many answers. Corruption, low education, but mostly the higher-ups just don't care about poor people and especially those from the North and Northeast even more so.

OPINION

The driving force behind the modern Christian revival

News, John Lloyd, Published on 24/12/2018

» Christmas is invariably the time for a grouch that neither Christ nor mas(s) feature much in a festival meant to rededicate Christian believers to the worship of the son of God. Materialism, especially for children, swamps, on this view, any reflection on the meaning of a Christian -- or religious -- life.

OPINION

Possibly an uncanny case of hoof in mouth

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 21/10/2018

» The gentleman in the White House has run into self-inflicted flak over his indelicate use of the word "horseface" in describing the adult film actress he may or may not have dangled with. However, she came storming back with a tweet of her own, referring to him as "Tiny", which one suspects was not a compliment. These exchanges could become quite entertaining.
