At the helm of Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary in Uthai Thani, he suffered numerous setbacks from deforestation and poaching to poverty. And after eight months of stewardship, he cleared his decks, made a will and shot himself in his quarters out of frustration in a bid to raise public awareness of environmental protection.

» It has been a bad year for tourism and a boom in the travel and hospitality sector would no doubt be good for the economy. However, it could also be a nightmare for people living and working amid the flux of transient tourists. It wasn't that long ago that we saw media reports of tourist misbehaviour from carving names on ancient Egyptian bas reliefs to chasing geishas down the streets in Kyoto. Around the world, countries are looking for ways to curb bad behaviour from tourists. Iceland, for instance, launched the Inspired by Iceland pledge in June 2017 that urges tourists to travel responsibly. Apart from implementing official rules, a recent research study reveals that poor tourist behaviour could be reduced by simply making the tourists feel closer to the locals.

» A volunteer garbage collector in Prachuap Khiri Khan, Suthep Naktang spotted a lot of used surgical masks left on beaches in the province, which added to piles of trash he and his volunteer group collects everyday. The same happened in the northern province of Kamphaeng Phet, where people found discarded surgical masks, used tissue paper and disposed medical gloves littering Sirijit Park. Even in Bangkok, a street sweeper reportedly said she found up to five discarded surgical masks on the street every day.
