OPINION

3.2% GDP growth 'pie in the sky'

News, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 11/01/2024

» This year must be my lucky year. One of the key points of this article is to underline the risk of financial crisis compared to 1997. But this time it would not come from bank failures, it would come from defaults on corporate bonds and commercial papers. The reasons are the low cash position of corporates from many years of weak economic performance and, most importantly, today's super-tight domestic liquidity to refinance matured bonds and papers. I am a little wary that readers may scorn such a bold opinion. However, out of the blue, my opinion was proven correct on Monday when Italian-Thai Development (ITD) announced the postponement of payments on its bonds due in 2024 to 2026 with a total value of 14.45 billion baht for two years.

The 'best job in the world' takes its toll

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 10/07/2022

» I am no fan of politicians but occasionally politics creates some splendid theatre, although some might call it pantomime. This was the case in the British Houses of Parliament this past week as Prime Minister Boris Johnson attempted to hold on to what he called "the best job in the world".

OPINION

Scans? What scans?

News, Postbag, Published on 28/01/2020

» My wife arrived from Taiwan yesterday at Suvarnabhumi airport at the same time as thousands of mainland Chinese with faces all covered with masks -- but to her surprise she could not find any health stations to scan arriving passengers for fever and other health concerns, especially with the coronavirus blowing freely around Asia.

OPINION

No foresight

News, Postbag, Published on 18/06/2019

» It was disappointing to read "Single-ticket Bangkok public transport pushed back to 2020", (BP, June 16). Bangkok has a mostly functional, and rapidly expanding, public transport system, yet it lags so very far behind other large cities in the implementation of very basic technology to allow passengers to use one card (or device) to travel on the entire network.

OPINION

No business sense

News, Postbag, Published on 16/02/2019

» The paper constantly tries to address the increase in income inequality with relation to farmers yet nobody applies “business sense” to the situation.
