Big Oil sails on amid storm threat

News, Ron Bousso, Published on 07/05/2025

» Top oil and gas companies are watching the worsening global economic outlook with trepidation, but they currently appear to be doing little to correct course in the face of the approaching storm. The level of uncertainty in global energy markets has shot up in recent months due to US President Donald Trump's tariff flip-flops, stop-start negotiations over the Ukraine conflict, tightening sanctions on Iran, and growing signs of disagreement among Opec and other major producers.

Afghan women's rights draw little attention

News, John J Metzler, Published on 07/11/2024

» Afghanistan's tragedy continues. Since the chaotic end of the Afghan war in August 2021, the country is now again ruled by the Islamic fundamentalist Taliban, which has literally turned the clock back on any hints of modernisation and civil and human rights advancements. The rights of women, and especially girls, have plummeted into a medieval miasma.

Please don't forget the unknown reindeer

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 18/12/2022

» As we hurtle into the festive season we will be hearing a lot of familiar songs associated with this time of the year. However, it's probably true that most of us can't remember more than a few lines of a song and even then don't get the words right.

Full of beans, but feeling a bit guilty

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 21/03/2021

» With all the tasty food available in Thailand it might seem to be sacrilege that on occasions I am partial to tucking into a bland plate of baked beans on toast. If I haven't tried it for a while it almost feels like a treat. It must be something to do with my heritage, because in Britain more than two million cans of baked beans are consumed every day. That's quite scary.

Bookshelves behind the talking heads

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 05/07/2020

» One result of the coronavirus is that the majority of news interviews on television are coming from people's homes, whether they be professional broadcasters, celebrities or the general public. They tend to get a bit tedious after a while and it is easy to find yourself examining the backdrop. This is invariably a bookshelf or a couple of weird paintings that are often far more interesting than what the person is actually saying.

Of lords, ladies and gentlemen

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 22/09/2019

» Congratulations are in order to former Bangkok Post journalist Natalie Bennett who has been made a House of Lords peer and is now named Baroness Bennett of Manor Castle. Natalie, or rather Lady Bennett, who had been the leader of the Green Party for several years, was given this title in former prime minister Theresa May's resignation honours list last week.

End of a sorry saga for mushroom pickers

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 19/05/2019

» The best news of the week is that the mushroom-picking couple have been released from jail following a royal pardon by His Majesty the King. It is a most pleasant surprise and hopefully puts an end to a grim nine-year saga that reeked of social injustice from the very first time it surfaced back in 2010.
