Applause for PM in tackling RTP rift

Oped, Chairith Yonpiam, Published on 23/03/2024

» After six months in office, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin may actually enjoy public applause for exercising his leadership by stepping into a high-profile rift between national police chief Pol Gen Torsak Sukvimol and his deputy, Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn after their dispute greatly tarnished the reputation of the Royal Thai Police (RTP).

Scandal-hit police in need of reform

Oped, Chairith Yonpiam, Published on 07/10/2023

» The Royal Thai Police (RTP) have plunged to a new low as the race for the top job by the big shots, Pol Gen Torsak Sukvimol and his rival Pol Gen Surachate "Big Joke" Hakparn, has turned ugly. The latest drama, which started with a raid on Pol Gen Surachate's house on Sept 25 by the Police Cyber Taskforce unit, shocked Thai society.

RTAF out of touch

Oped, Editorial, Published on 30/09/2022

» The plan to host a lavish inauguration ceremony for the new air force commander-in-chief, including a flyover this afternoon, shows poor judgement on the part of the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF).

Thanks to Gorbachev, SE Asia found peace

Oped, Kavi Chongkittavorn, Published on 06/09/2022

» Lest we forgot, President Mikhail Gorbachev was the Soviet leader who was the game changer in bringing an end to the Cambodian conflict. Southeast Asia owes him for giving peace a chance during the most turbulent time in this part of the world. The global media has widely credited him for ending the Cold War, opening up and giving more freedom in the Soviet Union, which was unfortunate as it also brought down the empire and led to the establishment of newly independent states.

Military deals need scrutiny

Oped, Editorial, Published on 18/01/2022

» On this date each year, the military marks the Royal Thai Armed Forces Day with pomp and pageantry, with soldiers marching to showcase the forces' strength and solidarity. In the past couple of years, the celebration has improved for the better, with more social campaigns incorporated into the activities for the day, in an effort to keep the military relevant to society in the modern age.

Weapons fiascos

Oped, Postbag, Published on 14/01/2022

» Re: “Air force confirms nod for new jets,” (BP, Jan 13). Our military procurement process has led to many fiascos — with no general, admiral, or ACM ever held accountable — and badly needs top-to-bottom reform.

It's a fair cop

Oped, Postbag, Published on 13/01/2022

» Re: "Cops culpable in condo rape", (Editorial, Jan 11). Again, the Bangkok Post writes of "a systemic flaw within the Royal Thai Police". But consistent with his other promises solemnly sworn as exculpatory excuses in May 2014 of long overdue reform, didn't Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha already reform all that sort of thing years ago?

Integrity pact a good start

News, Editorial, Published on 21/12/2020

» The Royal Thai Air Force's (RTAF) decision to sign an integrity pact for its light attack aircraft procurement last week is the right move to improve transparency in its weapons procurement process.
