The end of China's one-child policy, 10 years later

Oped, Yi Fuxian, Published on 09/01/2026

» Jan 1 marked a decade since China repealed its one-child policy. Just ten days earlier, Peng Peiyun, who long oversaw the often-brutal enforcement of China's family-planning rules, died at the age of 96, having never been held accountable for her actions. Some obituaries praised Peng for being "reform-minded", even though, in practice, she only perpetuated an utterly inhumane policy, whose consequences have barely begun to materialise.

2026 will be a year of debt struggles

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 08/01/2026

» Forget GDP growth. Forget tourist arrivals. Forget export figures. In 2026, Thailand's overriding economic challenge will not be growth but debt repayment.

Humanity's alignment problem

News, Antara Haldar, Published on 06/01/2026

» It's lunchtime on top of the world again. Time's annual "Person of the Year" issue released two weeks ago has revived the iconic Depression-era photograph of steelworkers casually lunching on a beam suspended over Manhattan. Safeguarding peace after border conflict

News, Kavi Chongkittavorn, Published on 06/01/2026

» 2026 began with good news: Thai–Cambodian ties showed signs of improvement following the release of 18 Cambodian soldiers on the final day of 2025. The fighting has stopped, but the wounds have left deep scars that are highly visible and difficult to heal. Worse, public trust across the border remains low, while anguished emotions remain high.

What if you take away the slingshot?

Oped, Sally Tyler, Published on 05/01/2026

» The latest ceasefire in the border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia is welcome news and hopefully signals an end to the displacement of thousands and tragic loss of life on both sides. The release of 18 Cambodian prisoners is an indication that the parties are delving more deeply into the process to resolve the conflict.

Inequality time bomb ticks away...

Published on 04/01/2026

» Thailand's inequality is not just unfair; it is unethical. It decides who gets a future and who does not long before effort, talent, or choice has any chance to matter.
