» The stop-go evacuation of rebel fighters and civilians from Aleppo had begun again as I write, but the reason for the last interruption was instructive. It was Jabhat Fatah al-Sham (formerly the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda) that burned the buses coming to evacuate the wounded from Foah and Kefraya.

» As new political parties rush to reserve names and kick off the registration process, there emerges an impression that our politics is being returned to a democratic mode. The existing political parties are supposed to start confirming the memberships of their members next month. However, there still is no clear signal from the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) over when it will allow political parties -- new or old -- to conduct activities. The road ahead remains full of pitfalls and loopholes. It will be a long time before the dust settles, if ever.

» The day after the cabinet approved a five-day holiday for Songkran, authorities announced another safe-driving campaign. This did not attract the same attention as the decision on the actual holiday dates, April 12 until April 16. The reason is that setting the dates was news. "Crackdowns" on disastrous Songkran driving have become a biannual ritual.
