Sex as violence

Life, Yvonne Bohwongprasert, Published on 17/03/2017

» The raw urgency of award-winning Indian-Canadian filmmaker Deepa Mehta's film Anatomy Of Violence, which examines the 2012 shocking assault and rape of medical student Jyoti Singh by six men aboard a moving bus in New Delhi, drives home the need to address gender inequality at the root.

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 17/03/2017

» On paper this is a pantheon of contemporary French acting: Gaspard Ulleil, Marion Cotillard, Lea Seydoux, Vincent Cassel and Natalie Baye. The director is Xavier Dolan, the Quebecois wunderkind who's had his five films premiered at Cannes at the age of just 27.

A taste of Paris

Life, Vanniya Sriangura, Published on 17/03/2017

» It's been two decades since Crepes & Co was established in Bangkok. The well-loved, brunch-centric restaurant, owned and run by a veteran Swiss hotelier-turned-restaurateur, has now grown to have four outlets in the city. That includes a lovely new joint opened just a few weeks ago at a small community plaza in Thong Lor 9.

Two wives, one husband

Life, Bernard Trink, Published on 17/03/2017

» For multi-millennia, marriage has been about possession. Hands of he/she belong to me. To be sure, in most societies the husband got the best of it as the wife's belongings became his. Why else wed? Well-to-do widows, with both her and her late spouse's goods in her hands, were the prize catch.

Bossed up!

» To make it easier for customers to track down, Panini Mafia has opened its first brick-and-mortar shop in addition to its original food truck. Although compact in size, the newly-opened store makes you feel welcomed with its cosy vibe and the affable chef Angelo. The ceiling is painted with a map of Italy, as a tribute to where pasta and paninis come from (duh). The half-bricked walls feature the restaurant's logo on the left, with the menu written on a mirror to the right.

Dragged by the heals

Guru, Mika Apichatsakol, Published on 17/03/2017

» We did it. We've gone where no other BKK lifestyle publication has gone before for a story. We went drag. Nope, we didn't just stand on the sidelines, ask questions and admire. We went in, literally, as far as you can go, and experienced it first-hand for ourselves. And who else would we entrust with all the hair glue, glitter and lip-overlining other than the one and only leading Thai drag diva extraordinaire Pangina Heals.

Living the life

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 17/03/2017

» It's typical nowadays to hear about an up and coming young artist, and if you think Ananya Birla is just another one of those, then you are sorely mistaken. True, the 22-year-old from India released her single, Livin' the Life back in November. But that's not all there is to Ananya. At 17, she founded Svatantra Microfinance, all the while studying at the University of Oxford and playing gigs. She also co-founded two other companies. The artist/entrepreneur was recently in Bangkok working on the remix of her single which is now out on iTunes and Spotify. Guru sat down with her to ask her some questions, while simultaneously feeling guilty that we haven't done half as much with our lives.

Nerd haven, food heaven

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 17/03/2017

» The setting: The Setting Paradise comes with different names for different people: Heaven, Shangri-La, Krispy Kreme, you name it. But for Bangkok's gamers and nerds, it's called Game Over. Equipped with consoles, PCs, and a huge assortment of board games and party games, Game Over has been a cool hangout place for both gamers and noobs alike. Recently, it held a grand reopening and added some perks to its already impressive location. There's an extended "club area" for those who want thumping music to go along with their night as well as a playground area for the younger ones who don't really know their way around a PS4 yet. But the highlight of all these additions could arguably be the fact that they now have a bar and a kitchen that allows them to have a full-blown menu of utter deliciousness.
