Kitchen Comforts

Guru, Richard Mcleish, Published on 22/03/2013

» What does W stand for? Branding, it seems. The W Hotel opened its doors in December to much fanfare, with Starwood going for it in terms of hype and cool. It was always going to be interesting to see the food and beverage slant in the place. And The Kitchen Table is a surprise package that somehow holds it all together and keeps things real for the hotel on the verge of eating itself. While downstairs they are trying to woo you at the subtlely named WooBar, upstairs is a more homey affair, where you are invited to sit up at the Kitchen Table for some relatively straightforward comfort offerings.

Malaysia's World Stage

Life, Richard Mcleish, Published on 09/04/2013

» Strange-looking instruments, unrecognisable accents, and infectious rhythms convened again in Penang over the weekend for Penang World Music Festival 2013. For its second year in current form, the musicians came from all over the world to demonstrate their varying crafts, speaking the communal language of rhythms and melodies. And with a national election looming in Malaysia and eager governmental support, the well-run gig was another big success for all involved.

Documentary gets on board with myanmar's changing youth

B Magazine, Richard Mcleish, Published on 07/04/2013

» The "skate or die" mantra of many skateboarders takes on a new meaning in Myanmar. A few years ago, it would have been almost impossible to freely skate down a public street in Yangon, when the name of skating legend Tony Hawk was as foreign to many as Barack Obama.

Cut,Copy,Paste

Guru, Richard Mcleish, Published on 19/04/2013

» There seems to be an awful lot of copycat cooking in this city, with trends being cut, copied and pasted around town as quickly as you can say, "Thong Lor is just too 2012... I'm moving to Ekamai." However, a new player in the game is Paste, which is bucking the trend and doing its own thing in a modern and innovative way.

To Market

Life, Richard Mcleish, Published on 22/02/2013

» Although softly spoken, Bangkok has a large Japanese population. The odd Sukhumvit sois between Phrom Phong and Thong Lor teem with unobtrusive venues, largely catering to Japanese clientele only. But surely there is big potential overlap between the two cultures - Thai and Japanese. There must be common ground, right?

In Print

Guru, Richard Mcleish, Published on 01/03/2013

» Although it sounds like either a journalist watering hole (moths to the light), or a disused printing factory, Thong Lor newcomer print bar is both neither and a lot more. The first child of ex-hotel-F&B-man David Stanton instead utilises the motif of the print media industry - the world of graphic icons, where image is everything, surface reigns supreme - to lure us in. But the laidback Kiwi has also tried to put a neighbourhood spin on things as well (albeit in one of the biggest bridge-and-tunnel destinations of the city). The result? A luring but slightly confused bar on the bustling Thong Lor watering strip, located both geographically and conceptually in the middle of big players Gossip and Soul Food Manahakorn. Intrigued? So were we.
