Follow the white rabbit

Guru, Richard Mcleish, Published on 28/06/2013

» If you're looking for a quiet spot to coffee up in Thong Lor, then track the rabbit down to the hidden and homey shophouse burrow of slow coffee bar Casa Lapin x49. Although a little culturally muddled (mixing Spanish and French words), the place gets seemingly everything else right and takes up the mantle the first branch in Thong Lor Art Village (Sukhumvit Soi 55) established, this time with more confidence and deeper pockets.

Homestyle haven

Guru, Richard Mcleish, Published on 05/07/2013

» There has been a lot of talk about homestyle kitchens in Bangkok of late, to the point where it feels like you're being short changed by a dish that isn't couriered in from the countryside directly to your table. But there's no need to feel left out for not having a grandma at home to cook for you, as one kitchen in Thong Lor is more than making up for it, bringing slices of rare regional Thailand to the big city.

Transplanted Bangkokian in Washington

B Magazine, Richard Mcleish, Published on 14/07/2013

» Gossiping, girl's nights out and gold-digging crushes are instantly recognisable tropes of the popular literary genre of female commercial literature, known as chick-lit. Now we can add som tam and spice to the list because the genre has a new Thai counterpart. Tichakorn Khroopan Hill's debut novel, From Bangkok with Despair: (mis)adventures in DC, on the surface seems to retread the stiletto-punctured paths of the genre with blind faith, but the subtleties of having a Thai author (and protagonist) at the narrative helm gently surface like bubbles in a big mango Bellini. So how has Tichakorn brought a distinctly Thai flavour to the book and how much will she confess is autobiographical?

Joy's adventures in Washington

B Magazine, Richard Mcleish, Published on 14/07/2013

» Every fashion-conscious capital in the world has its proud face of chick-lit. London has Bridget Jones and her diary, New York has Carrie Bradshaw and her well-publicised sex life. So is the world ready for a Thai face to take up the mantle?

» ELECTRO: There's lots of live music and art this week again, as the DJ-dominated party scene of the past abates. Things kick off tonight (Jul 19) with one half of brotherly outfit Kyoto Jazz Massive, who are known for their jazz-spiked production work that is very Japanese - precise, refined, on point. Venue is Fish (3/F, Cosmic Cafe, RCA Block C, Rama IX Road, 081-304-6907), which will hopefully bring in some extra hi-fi to accommodate the fresh soundscape of the guy. We're guessing he is just going to DJ, without any live elements on top but it's still a treat for the bedroom rockers of the city who will appear out of the ether for it. Entry is only B200.
