Midlife art attack

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 28/08/2013

» Getting up to create a collection of art pieces despite a lack of any skill or training may sound like a symptom of a midlife crisis, but if it's going to give you something pretty to look at, why not?

Radiating cuteness

» French photographer and scholar on Japanese visual culture Claude Estebe returns to Bangkok for his third exhibition at Toot Yung Gallery, which recently moved to Ekamai Soi 2. The revamped space is clean and simple, but his close-ups of iconic Japanese robots and merchandising toys stand out against the neutral grey walls more than ever.

Kharma's gonna get you

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 11/09/2013

» On the face of it, a subject as weighty as kharma wouldn't take too well to caricature, but the exhibition currently underway at Bangkok's 100 Tonson Gallery, "Karma Police", successfully creates a multicoloured luminosity from this seemingly heavy theme.

» There isn't much to expect coming out of a no-brainer masala flick, but Phata Poster Nikla Hero gives you something to talk about _ namely Shahid Kapoor's superb acting which outshines everything and practically saves the movie from being a completely moronic flop.

All aboard Chennai Express

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 16/08/2013

» The first reflex upon coming out of Chennai Express is probably to question whether Shah Rukh Khan is really past his prime _ to the extent that he must settle for slapstick comedy. Then again, people need to remember that this energetic and literally colourful movie was not meant to be taken seriously.

Days of being wild

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 07/06/2013

» Coming-of-age films usually plant a new seed of hope in our hearts, and while Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (This Crazy Youthful Feeling) will strike come chords with young adults, it doesn't quite wrap up all that it started.

A bug's life

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 12/06/2013

» You cannot help but admit that each day it's becoming harder to survive, let alone live. A slug can move faster than the line at Starbucks. The Android is too confusing to use, but it's all you can afford. Home-cooked food tastes too crappy for your liking. Your iPod battery ran out so you had to walk down the street listening to birds chirping like some medieval peasant.

Drawing on culture

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 04/03/2013

» The 54-year-old is calm and collected, quite unlike the character he draws. French illustrator Jean-Philippe Delhomme stands amidst a bevy of Thai editorial faces - people with really nice houses and who are upper-class event hoppers - and easily blends in with the classy luxuriance of the Sansiri Lounge at Siam Paragon. He meticulously sharpens his colour pencils by hand before thoughtfully drawing his character The Unknown Hipster into each inside cover at his very first book signing in Thailand.

High Spirits

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 29/03/2013

» The first reflex traditionalist fans of the ancient legend will have on laying their eyes on the lead cast is probably to die a little on the inside. The feeling exponentially multiplies upon watching a trailer that depicts Pee Mak, played by Mario Maurer, as an abbaew airhead. It really makes you wonder if there's something wrong with Mak or Nak: is this nitwit, albeit cute as a button, seriously the guy she has been remorsefully lamenting over?
