Winter is coming

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 04/04/2014

» ‘Summer is coming” doesn’t quite have the same ring as “winter is coming”. In fact, it sounds like a sarcastic comment in Thailand, which deals with a climate hotter than seven hells all year long, not to mention our simmering politics, with countless climaxes that result in no change whatsoever. For the unaware, “winter is coming” is one of the trademark phrases from the Game Of Thrones TV series, coined to imply that something dark, frightening and lethal is in the future.

Packing a punch of emotions

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 20/02/2014

» It’s definitely something to question. Why hadn’t someone staged a muay Thai play in Thailand earlier? Maybe our sabai sabai temperament is the cause, but after all these years, Ekachai Uekrongtham has finally created a piece of theatre — Muay Thai Live — that single-mindedly uses muay Thai as the main fuel to create a spectacular live show. First opening at Asiatique earlier this year, Muay Thai Live encapsulates the origins and heroes of muay Thai in history, spanning 300 years from the past to present day, into an hour-and-a-half timeframe.

Amateur Pursuits

» For Gen-Xers and the whole crew born before them, the internet obviously wasn't an available platform for broadcasting self-indulgent thoughts, nor was mediocre smartphone photography a tool for publicising their lives the way it is for today's young generation. Nevertheless, people who weren't literary luminaries or sought-after artists still expressed themselves, and did so through fanzines _ "zines" for short.

Successful wrap for Krrish family saga

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 08/11/2013

» We'd be here all day if we were to list every single US flick from which Krrish 3 probably drew inspiration _ and against which it could never hope to measure up (if we give credence to the naysayers, this is) _ so let's not play the comparing game. What's called for, in such cases, is a complete disregard for the wrapper these action movies come in, be it Bollywood or Hollywood, in order to see the contents for what they really are.

Love is a many-splendoured thing

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 22/11/2013

» This mammoth love story of the year is very much a piece of musical mayhem as it is a colourful riot. The spellbinding cinematography and extravagant numbers are clearly what will draw many to the cinema to begin with, and although pushing it a tad too far at over two-and-a-half hours, it mostly manages to keep you reeled in until the last minute.
