LIFE

Now showing

» Cinemas are back! After another semi-lockdown that forced cinemas to close, we can finally enjoy a proper movie-going experience again. Sure, it might be capped at 50% capacity and you can only sit with one person beside you instead of the classic cinema experience of having your girlfriend on your left while a dude who munches popcorn loudly is on your right. Sigh, nostalgia! But we'll take what we can get for now. Though it's easy to simply go to the nearest mall to go to the cinema, we're spotlighting places that offer a different experience. These indie cinemas deserve as much love as any of the multiplexes do. After losing iconic places like Scala and Bangkok Screening Room, we should do what we can to keep these cinemas alive. Get the popcorn and settle in. It's time to go back to the movies.

Playstation dominance

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 01/10/2021

» The console wars have raged on since multiple consoles came on the scene and the question of "which is the best console?" has been asked on forums and argued at gaming conventions for years. It's a question that doesn't really have a definitive answer, but PlayStation definitely had a "drop the mic" moment with their latest PlayStation Showcase.

New kid on the block

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 04/12/2020

» Being in the shoes of everyone's favourite Webslinger was a dream made possible by 2018's Marvel's Spider-Man. It was no surprise then that when Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales was announced, fans were hyped. Not only would we able to swing through the streets of New York once more and continue the story where the first game left off, but this time we get to play as the new Spider-kid in town, Miles Morales.

Staycationing in style

» Domestic travel has opened up and some semblance of travelling is finally back. A trip to Phuket or a drive to Hua Hin is all good and fun but for some of us, we may be running short on funds or we really just don't have the time to make any sort of trip. Perhaps it's too much of a hassle to fly or to drive, but that doesn't mean we don't want to get away for a bit of R&R and spend an entire day in bed.

Welcoming a new decade!

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 03/01/2020

» For those of you who may have missed it, we are in a new decade. Yes, you read that right. No, you are not hallucinating. Yes, we are all old. Welcome to the beginning of the 2020s where films like Back To The Future and Blade Runner are not just classics but the future worlds depicted in them are now effectively in the past; where years like 2050 and 2060 no longer sound ridiculous like they did back in the early 2000s and where those born in 2000 are 20 years old. It's a lot to take in, that's for sure. With every new year also comes the declarations of "New year, new me" posted all over social media and vocally announced at dinner tables everywhere. Resolutions are made and kept for a good two weeks or so before being thrown out the window. So instead of trying to expect things to happen that we aren't even sure will happen, let's take a look at the stuff that we're fairly certain will happen this year. Here's a couple of things to look forward to this 2020.

Thai pride

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 15/11/2019

» Thailand is well-known around the world for a number of things: beautiful beaches, great food and extremely friendly people, to name a few. It's also home to a variety of homegrown talent be it in the entertainment industry or elsewhere. Sure, you can probably name a bunch off the top of your head that people go gaga for right here in the country, but there's also a number of them who are pretty well-known internationally, some of whom you may not be aware of. Either way, these are people who are making their motherland proud and whose works are worthy to be celebrated. From make-up artists to cake designers, here are Thais who are getting recognition locally and internationally for their work.

The art and science of burgers

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 03/05/2019

» Rattanapong "Taiki" Tsubota made waves two years ago when he started Homeburg. If it isn't obvious already, the name is a mix of "home" and "burger", which encapsulates the burgers he made back then. But that isn't the reason why his burgers went viral. Aside from being meticulously and precisely crafted, he was serving four to eight burgers a day, eventually racking up a long wait list. Now, he's set up shop for the next six months at 72 Courtyard with Bun Meat & Cheese by Homeburg, where he's serving his famed burgers with a slightly higher availability at 100 burgers a day. We sat down with the burgerman to talk about his method and process, and why he wants to keep a limit on the burgers.

The Year That Was

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 28/12/2018

» 2018 has come and gone as quickly as motorcyclists swerve off the sidewalk when they see a cop. And it's been a whirlwind of a year -- the Winter Olympics, Harry and Meghan, Yanny and Laurel and the daring rescue of the boars. With the many, many events, it's hard to recap everything in one go. Plus, we don't want to make the same mistake YouTube Rewind did. So we decided to ask people from various walks to life to tell us what the year has been for them. Here's a look back at 2018 and here's us wishing you a Happy New Year!

The great outdoors

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 09/11/2018

» If you have felt the crisp, cool Bangkok mornings, then you're probably aware that the cool season is about to kick-off. While we may not have four seasons in Thailand, we definitely have camping season. The slightly lowered temperatures means this is the perfect time to spend a few days in the mountains surrounded by nature instead of skyscrapers. The word "camping" may give rise to a few assumptions -- roughing it out in the wild, having to rely on your wits and limited resources, being out in the open with the possibility of dangerous animals lurking about, sleeping in a tiny cramped tent, and worse of all, having to go to the "toilet" in a hole in the ground. But it's 2018 and there ways to go camping without having to suffer such discomfort.
