» Krabi's reputation as a tourist destination on the Andaman coast needs no promotion. But apart from its famous beaches and islands, the province has several important archaeological sites, including the oldest site in Thailand and Asia, the Lang Rongrien Rockshelter. A recent Fine Arts Department trip to Krabi revealed the significance of these archaeological sites as well as man's impact on them.

    Travelling towards neighbourly understanding

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 06/03/2015

» In December, I expressed concerns about the bad reputation of Chinese tourists in Thailand and other countries. Unfortunately, problems caused by them have persisted and many Thais have started to react. Last month, Wat Rong Khun in Chiang Rai imposed a temporary ban on Chinese tourists after some of them dirtied the temple's toilets. Days later, a picture showed a Chinese tourist kicking sacred bells at a temple in Chiang Mai. Many Thais were understandably outraged.

    Revisiting the original Bangkok

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 31/07/2014

» Thon Buri, the portion of Bangkok lying on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, is widely known for its scenic waterways, historic temples, diverse culture and many culinary delicacies. A study, carried out by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s Department of City Planning in 2012, listed 452 Buddhist temples in the capital, including 211 in Thon Buri. A self-designed walking trip, inspired by a trip led by culture expert Chulapassorn Panomvan Na Ayudhya, allowed us to explore six temples in the Thon Buri district of Bangkok Noi, most of which are in a sub-district called Bang Khun Non.

A matter of land and rights

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 08/08/2014

» Last month, I received a letter from a representative of more than 700 residents of five villages in Non Dindaeng district, Buri Ram province, complaining about being evicted from their homes without compensation. According to the letter, the villagers have been living on degraded forestland of Dong Yai Forest for more than four decades and have an official document permitting them to stay on it. They say a number of state officials have been trying to evict them, destroying their crops, cutting their rubber trees and threatening to destroy their rice plants and demolish their houses. The group later petitioned for royal assistance and is awaiting a response.

    Feast for the senses

Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 22/05/2014

» Thon Buri is well-known for its historic old temples, scenic waterways, the diversity of its culture and the many culinary delicacies still made there. The Canal Protection Act of 1941 noted that Bangkok east of the Chao Phraya River, the area officially called Phra Nakhon, had a total of 64 canals while the portion of the metropolis lying on the west bank, Thon Buri, was served by 31 canals. However, in the interim, many of these have been filled in and built over or have become so silted up they are now too shallow to be navigable.
